9" housing is ready to go in but only problem is i have no brakes, axle bearings, seals or axle collar. What i need to sort out is whats gonna be easiest/convient setup for the rear. I was hoping to transfer the brakes from the donor vk 9" but backing plate will not sit on the axle flange. Also the axles are different thickness so i cant simply transfer the bearings from the vk to the torana axles. Any help welcomed. Few pics to help clear up any questions as well

Cheers,
Baz.

And finally the axles (lh=vk rh=lx):

Why don't you just use the standard (LX) torana rear drum brakes on the 9 inch. Would they bolt straight onto that housing?

I just swapped my stock torana brakes to my 9 inch. That was the easiest option for me at the time.

ANY rear brakes can be adapted to a 9". Just depends on how much money you want to spend.

The backing plates have the same problem of not sitting flush on the axle flange. And the lx rear brake setup is a bit of an abortion if you ask me...

Looks like you have the big ford flange which will take ford brakes. See the following website for measurements.

A disc brake kit from rrs will cost around $1200

i have those on mine and run with ford drums, same size as an hq ,drilled to suit hq rims.the brake cylinders are one inch bore so should keep everything balanced. not sure if the brake shoe area is the same as an hq but would have to be within reason.

u have 2 options with your 9" that has ford bearing axle ends.

1 is to run ford brakes, bolt on. Just get black rotors drilled to HQ or Commodore pattern
2 if you want commodore brakes, you need to get your axle flanges changed to holden ones, Torana HQ-WB, Commodore are all the same just get an old diff and get a diff shop to cut and weld them on square, you'll be running a smaller weaker tapered bearing then the current large ford one but you can then run pretty much any factory holden brakes you want from torana drums to VS Commodore disc brakes.

When I get my 9" I plan to use the Ford bearing axle ends and use the XB-F rear brakes as they are vented, they seem good to me for that reason.

Just an update. Went to WA Suspensions today and had a look at the RRS setup. Took a couple of happy snaps. Basically the kits a straight bolt on 280mm rotor and a PBR single piston caliper. Handbrake setup is a drum in disc setup and would require getting a suitable cable made up. The kits they stock are for a small ford diff end, so getting it made up for big ford ends is about an extra $50-100 and waiting time of about 2-3 weeks. Pretty keen on going with this setup but just keeps adding dents to the initial budget. But i'd rather do what i want first time rather then just get it together and take it apart and redo...

Only downside is they will only supply the kits in a ford stud pattern. So i'm gonna get some billet axles in ford stud and Hoppers Stoppers are more then happy to do the front brake upgrade in ford stud pattern so will just need to get some new rims. Short term i have 2 5 stud 16" rims off a r32 skyline which will mean i can do the rear end and keep car moveable.

Heres some pics of the kit:

Heres a great diagram showing the ford diff ends off the RRS website, good reference pic:

Good to see Russel helped you out
The advantage of this kit is that if you ever want to step it up to a bigger size disc you can
The 315mm vented and even bigger ones will go straight onto that backing and bracket

Its commodore based

I would have thought that you could get blank discs drilled to any pattern you want. What disc are they using in the kit?

you could always just ask for the kit with Blank, or no discs and then get some drilled to suit HQ pattern

Was told they wouldn't supply the kit in anything but ford pattern. But not to worry cause i'm just gonna get the front kit in ford to... Was planning on getting billet axles down the track but this gives me an excuse to get them now as well and while i'm at it gonna go for a new 9" lsd just to make sure i've blown the budget. Opens up to a wider range of wheels also.
