LSD- uses clutches, cones or some other device to limit differential action with in the "diff"

Pros- Its legal, smooth much better than an open diff in a peformance application

Cons- they do wear out with spirited driving

MINI SPOOL- joins the axles together...no differential action

pros-cheap way to get rid of the differential action

cons-illegal

FULL SPOOL- Completely removes the hemisphere that the differential gears go into, Crownwheel bolts to the spool and the axles are inserted into it when it is fitted.

Pros- strong, gets rid of differential action

Cons- illegal

LOCKER- a few different types of lockers...detroit locker, air locker...list goes on...maybe you mean CIG locker...Locked diff is any type of diff that won't allow differential action when cornering.

Pros- same as the rest..drives 2 axles not one

Cons- If it doesn't unlock its illegal

What the Hell is a CIG Locker? I've heard the term a few times, and always thought it could refer to a standard diff (ie: Banjo) that had been welded up. Am i right?

What the Hell is a CIG Locker?

CIG refers to where you used to get your welding equipment from. This is "old school" terminology. Now you would relate to BOC locker ( the new name for CIG)

Have a look at this site for an explanation of how diffs work and just about anything else.

http://auto.howstuff...ifferential.htm

This site explains Detroit auto locking diffs.
http://www.locked-drive.com.au/

The mini spool and full spool both lock the diff permanently. The mini spool does this by replacing the pinion gears but retaining the original crown wheel carrier. The full spool replaces the crown wheel carrier and is stronger than the mini spool.

Permanently locked diffs can only go around corners by breaking the traction of one of the tyres.

Medium,
This had me lost for a while too..never worked out what a spool was. Look on Ebay for mini and full spools in Ford parts. The mini spool slips in the side of the single spinner diff to lock the 2 axles together so both drive at the same time. basically locks the diff up. The full spool does it exactly the same but is one big unit that both axles slide into. On the mini with big horses you could break it..with a full spool I reckon the axles would go first. Hope that helps. All V8 Supercars run full spools.

^ have you ever driven a car with a mini spool. U turns are just a turn of the wheel and a blip of the throttle.

Woah I didn't know V8 supercars ran Full Spools! What I don't get is 2-Way Mechanical LSDs and Full spools...They seem to do the same thing? With 1.5 way it unlocks off throttle so wheels turn differently through the corner and when your back on the gas they 'lock' the wheels together for better apex hitting. I thought 1.5 ways would be better for circuit racing? Spools are for drifting.
