My richmond gears were fairly noisy.
I've also had genuine Ford gears, and they were perfectly quiet.
I've heard Motive gears are really good, and reasonably priced. That would probably be my choice.

I've heard from a couple of sources that Motive gears can be noisy. Some are, some aren't. US Strange are apparently quiet. I don't have a 9" yet, so I couldn't personally tell you.

I had 3.5 Richmond gears in my old 9", could say they were noisy as all I heard was the exhaust.

From my research, if you want perfectly quiet gears, like in a brand new car, then you have to spend the big $ and buy genuine ford, or get 2nd gears relapped by someone who knows what they are doing, or then 3rd choice, go aftermarket.
Try www.vpw.com.au for online pricing.

Motive are the cheapest but if you want them quiet they MUST be lapped before use.

I'll be using Motive for the drag car. Saves me about $200 and I won't hear the noise unless I hook up a muffler, which is unlikely.

just for the un initiated what does lapped mean, and where can it be done, costs involved etc.

Lapping the gears is basicly a reface, like um, decking the head so its true.
Its required for the gears to mesh correctly, or they may toe in or out and wear, like your tyres.

Shimming is used to set the correct mesh (contact area between the gear teeth), lapping makes the contact surface uniform, ie it removes the peaks in the surface.
