My fuel sender in my tank is gone, is it a common problem?

Is it an easy fix or where can I purchase replacement parts?

That could well be a cheaper option, depending on what's damaged.

Measured resistance from the sender unit (out of tank) today and it was flucuating as I moved the float from empty-full-empty etc.
The guage moves if I earth out the sender wire.

Sounds like a bad earth from the sender unit when it is in the tank, the tank is painted.
Can I run an earth strap from the outside of the pickup tube to a clean earth source or is this a No-No?

If it's on the outside of the tank, it shouldn't be a problem.
