hi im sick of my gear box jumping out of first when ever its not going into gear properly and after discussing it with 'dangerous', i/we hav come to the conclusion its time to replace the shifter, i have another shifter that is real sweet but its a bit long so what i want to know is, especially from the guys that race torrys, what length is the optimal length bearing in mind im a strong lad so its not like i need the length for leverage. what does everyone recomend? oh and also i dont have to worry about a console for it to clear so in theory i have free reign
cheers adam

Be careful, here, your shifter may be a problem but teh cuase may lie in the gearbox itself. M20 are notorious for jumping out of 1, 2, and 3 for badly set up linkages. Once it does start to jump out of gear the syncro wear like crazy and in the process stress the input shaft gearset. I have seen many M20 with stripped input shafts all due to the shifter not being adjusted correctly and thus killing the box. I would be at least taking the inspection plate off and making sure the syncro does look ok.

I had one that used to pop out of 1st & 3rd because the box wasn't bolted to the bellhousing properly.

yeah but considering its easier to change a shifter then a gear box its a good place to start in my eyes

i took about an inch an a half off of my shifter in the blue hatch.
still fits well in the console and is much nicer to shift.
think i took about the same amount off of the one in dangerous's
blue hatch as well.much nicer to drive when you dont punch the radio!
