My mates LH has this problem where you need to turn the steering wheel about 1/4 to half turn before the car will steer, you can fel the steering load at about half turn and then it will steer, both directions.
Its like something has a lot of play (worn) but its not fun to drive as feels a bit dangerous when you start drifiting thru lanes or end u[p going straight instead of thru the corner.
Should I be looking at the steering coupling and knuckle or does it sound like worn tie rods?
Car wonders a bit?

Steering couplings, then play in rack (perhaps the rack is not secured to the crossmember).
Get your mate to wobble the steering wheel thru 9-3 o'clock positions while you look in the engine bay to see where the movement stops being transmitted.

Anyway, 1/4 turn of the wheel b4 anything happens is outright dangerous, and something could be about to fail in a big way...........dont drive it til its sorted.
A worn steering coupling will give about 10 degrees of freeplay b4 it hits the "bumpstops". Sounds more serious than just the coupling.
Loose or worn cotter pins, there are four of them could give up to 1/4 turn of slack. As mentioned ^, easy to check out if the prob is in this part of the chain, grip the top steering knuckle, twist it and see that you get the same amount of twist in the shaft below the coupling.

Ive driven the car but it was at night and I havent seen it since, ill go around on the weekend and check it out and replace what needs doing, might as well put all new bushes and shocks in whilst im at it.

Put the car on the hoist last night, well there was no bushes left in the steering rack. Seems the rack had an inch play each side til it had some load then it would turn.
New bushes today and she's good as new
