Geday all,
Thinking about changing my car to an auto when I rebuild the motor.
It is currently a mild 350 chev, but I am hoping it will be transformed into a
450+ hp 383 stroker!
Just not too sure which auto too go.
Driveline is currently top loader and 9 inch.
I was mainly thinking either turbo 350, or powerglide
What are your thoughts?
Car will be a street/strip car, driven every month or so
How much horsepower can each box take, and how much dollars will all this cost?
Also, can anyone recommend places that specialise in tough autos?
Thanks in advance
Timbo

If you want to sleep easy at night T400, if your live life on the edge and are risky go the T350. If your game go a Trimatic.

Turbo 350 should suit your application. Built with good parts those hp figures your quoting should be no probs. If you want pace of mind than Turbo 400 is a stronger box but does take more hp to turn so for the better on track performance the Turbo 350 is better. Only go with the glide if it's going to be a track car only. I meet quite a few guys out at the strip running Torries in the 10 to 12sec bracket that changed from glides back to Turbo 350s with no reliability dramas.

If you want to be able to cruise on the street at 110 km/h then the TH700 lets you setup the car to run 3 gears on the strip and 4 gears for the street.

The following speeds are calculated using 235/40/17 tyres and 3.55 diff ratio. The gearbox ratios are from a Gregorys commodore manual and the net.

TH700
3.06 @ 6000 = 65 km/h
1.63 @ 6000 = 121 km/h
1.0 @ 6000 = 197 km/h
0.7 @ 6000 = 282 km/h
0.7 @ 2400 = 110 km/h

TH350
2.52 @ 6000 = 78 km/h
1.52 @ 6000 = 130 km/h
1.0 @ 6000 = 197 km/h
1.0 @ 3400 = 112 km/h

You will find a link to a speed calculator posted by tiny in this thread.

2 gears fast and faster...what else do you need go the powerglide, my old orange LH had 1 behind the 350, 3.7gears and a 4200 stall, lots of fun

T700 has to be the worst GM box ever built, next to the trimatic.
Bad 1st gear but the OD is nice.

I have a th700 behind my chev with 3.5's and a 3000 stall. Very happy with the box. I guess it all depends on who builds it.
There does seem to be a bit of a gap between 1st and 2nd though would probably be a bit better if it was 2.8 or something like that

motor is currently being rebuilt, should have 490hp and 480ft/lbs plus a shot of NOS on top.
