Hey all....
in the spirit of the popular TV Show.... I have a BT1 VR Exec 5.0 5Sp ex Cop Car (Vic) and I have often herd that they put in a performance "chip"... is this a myth or fact?

And how much can a chip improve HP (sorry Kw), as all in can control is spark and fuel delivery....

and the letter Nazi's can go to hell..."Kw" you know what I mean...

BT1's are stock 5.0l. Most dealerships put chips in them when they purchase them from the police. A chip on it's own does bugger all. For HSV to get from 165kw to 185kw in the VR they did exhaust, chip, cold air induction and knock sensor. A VR BT1 is basically an SS without all the body kit.

Hey Guy's,
VR VS day's and pretty sure its still the same, most Vicpol cars were/are auto's except for the specific roles for pursuit cars and highway patrol vehicles. These cars did / do have the upgraded chip, exhaust, FE2, cold air, etc. However they are the minority you will find that quite a lot of other areas within Vicpol drove V8 cars that were just standard. I know that currently some non uniform squads have show room standard SS, SV8 and V8 utes and sedans that they use, and you can bet that the dealers will tell the customers they are Police Pack cars when the time comes to sell them.....

Just so people know when you are looking at buying an ex Vicpol car don't be afraid to ring Dawson st Police centre and ask for some info on the cars, my current VX V6 is an ex vicpol car that was only driven by one bloke an inspector I think so you can get some info..

Regards
Duck05

As Duck05 said.

I purchased a VL turbo back in the past, ex Police, and the history I got from Dawson street was the contributing factor to making the purchase.

The info provided by Dawson street correlated with most of the Vc roads info too.

Details I am referring to are, reg history, kms at disposal, dawson street mods (these are seperate to Holden - and not performance related) service history and most importantly - vehicle usage and reason for disposal.

In the end it was one of the better cars I have owned.

BT1 was stamped long after the VL. VT1's still had BT1 on the tag, it's a good way to pick a cop car from an SS as many dealerships tried to make out ex cop cars were actually SS's by fitting body kits as they all had SS trim. All BT1's had FE2, different wheels and tyres, a mod to the auto gearbox that allowed downshifting without holding the handle up, and the speedo calibrated in 2km incriments. There were also some extra bits of wiring etc. A VR VS BT1 will have a rear braklight on the parcel shelf, and SS will not. Some Vic police cars, mainly in highway patrol were manual.

i dont know about any where else in australia but in SA they are supposed to take the chips out before reselling them, their excuse is they wont meet pollution standards. its funny how it was never an issue with their previous owners!!!!!

To the best of my knowledge from speaking with friends who are police officers, their cars are factory stock items.

I dont know whether they always were in the past, but apparently all cars including highway patrol are bog stock ( appart from the obvious police stuff like uprated altenator, callibrated speedo etc.)

Cheers.

Absolutely correct. All NSW HWP cars are delivered stock standard with the BT1 options, (or whatever they call it these days). No modifications are allowed, period, full stop, never, ever ever, ever, ever. A standard HWP vehicle is still a good bit of gear though.

However, some cars many years ago were modified by their drivers unofficially, ( I am talking up to around VN's), this was a no no but did happen, usually to exhausts, cats and tuning, The VL Turbos were a special to have the wastegate and pop off valve modified to up the boost. Havent heard of it happening any time lately....

I own 2 VN BT1's one is a V6 and the other is a V8 and both white and they both have BT1 on the id tag on the firewall.. From what iv noticed by owning them is these differences , Map lights on the roof, 2K speedo increment, FE2(on tags), Bigger brakes(VL Turbo type on front with vented fin caliper and biger disk) no boot release, Auto shifter can be thrown back into low gears without pushing button, the V8 car has LSD the V6 doesnt. Another thing i have noticed is the steering is verry light compared to any other VN i drive and iv been told they have a different rack pinnion like statsmen( is this a myth).. Oh and both cars dont have a rear muffler/resignator but this could have been done at anytime..

On another note what was the paint code for the Yellow BT1s, im pretty sure VK, VL & VN all had the same colore yellow..

There are probly some more things witch i cant remember right now.

John

edit: Both cars have long range fuel tanks.
