Hi Les,

I just read a post on the NSW monaro club web site of a guy who's used the Rares regulator kit and suffered some problems.

I'll paste the post here for you to have a look at! Maybe his findings can help with some R&D!

mmm, more problems with rare spares replacement parts, as i have said before, i am grateful that they provide a service, however i have had problems with the roller repair kit, and the regulator repair kit.

1st problem with the roller repair kit, is that it is not complete, you do have to re-use some of your old parts, they should just charge an extra $30 for the kit and make it complete.

2nd problem with the roller repair kit, the rollers for the door glass (not regulator rollers), are too long, glass retainer plates need to be drilled out to fit new rollers, once they are in they are way way way too long to peen them over successfully without damaging them, the only way to achieve proper fitment is to grind down the mounting pin, then they can be peened over without too many drama's, however the problem with grinding down the mounting pin is that it does create excessive heat, thus fouling the operation of the roller, in hind sight, if yours are ok ( as mine were), leave em on!!! less headaches.

1st problem with the regulator repair kit, is that it is really nothing like the orignal assembly.

The 2nd problem is in the mounting of the winding mechanism, holes need to be drilled into the regulator arm to allow fitment of the new winding mechanism, after reading the instructions and being advised to drill 3 x 6.5mm hole to accomodate the rivets, it was discovered on closer inspection that IF these holes were drilled into the regulator arm assembly that it would NOT work, the only thing it would succeed in doing is leaving 2 holes at the top of the regulator assembly so close to the edge of the regulator(where the holes were drilled) were non-existant, I opted to drill 2 smaller 5mm holes for the top, and one 6.5mm for the bottom, grind off the guide pins for the top, leave the bottom guide pin and finally fit it!!

after spending $240+ on these repair kits and the drama's involved in fitting them, i really would of prefered to pay $300+ and have a better designed, complete kit that was alot more like O.E.M.

It aint about the money, it's about what works!!!

Thanks Tiny
We have answered this guy before even by email I am not sure what he whats an answer that is correct or one that suits him anyway I have the answer if you could post it form that would be great
Thanks Les

1st problem with the roller repair kit,
These kits are produced to provide the necessary parts for the needs of the majority of customers. The additional components you are talking about are not normally required and therefore would be a waste of money for those customers that dont use them. There are many kits RARE SPARES produce that could be loaded full of niceties however most people would prefer to only pay for the parts they will require to make the job complete.

2nd problem with the roller repair kit,
The reason the hole needs to be enlarged is because in some cases the original hole is flogged out and if the shank was the same size as the original you would not get a tight fit, in fact the new roller would wobble around and not work as it should. The best way to fit the rollers to the glass lifter channels is to star spread them with a small blunt chisel, I dont recommend you grind the shank down as the larger the spread , the better retention the roller will have. Of course you need to sit the head of the pin of the roller when spreading the shank otherwise you will damage it. I normally use the head of a small centre punch as support.

1st problem with the regulator repair kit,
I cant understand why you have such a negative attitude towards these replacement kits, the fact that you need to drill new holes is not a big issue and once fitted to the door, the difference is not visible. The main body of the winder mechanism is a standard part from another type window regulator and therefore is slightly different to the original. Once fitted it works fine and doesnt look any different in the door. Sometimes we need to compromise with replacement parts as it is the only economical way of producing them. In this case a repair kit for these cars do not demand large quantities and therefore we have opted to supply a kit that is not exactly the same as the original however fits and works fine once installed.

Chevy, best think you could do is to click on to rares website

http://www.rsp.net.au/mainind.htm

Choose your location ( or one close.. cause they do mail order) and spend about 3 days going through the MASSIVE list of gear that they sell!!

it's pretty conveniently listed by make and model and its awesome to see some of the stuff you wouldnt have thought was possible to get!

And all with prices too!

Dont forget to have a look at the online shop that is part of this forum. There is a post and link in the general section, but it's been liited to their torana parts! The best thing there is that they give the forum an awesome donation for every sale through the shop!

Cheers.

LC grille are a nogo at this stage but we are looking at the headlamp rims.
