Hey im just contemplating whether or not to replace the bearings in my uc steering column. when i grab the steering wheel there is like 1/4 inch free play up and down. and where the coloumn shaft come out in the engine bay the bearing is flogged out the shaft moves all over the place.

has anyone done it before or knows if its possible to do. Cheers <_<

Its a funny setup that bearing just 2 bits of metal and ball bearings. The 2 bits of metal are crimped together in the middle. I did look into repairing mine but ended up finding a complete LH unit for $10 with a great bearing. Although the hole for the indicator was in a different postion and had to modify it for my LX

This is what the manual has to say on removing the steeering column on floor shift models.

1) open engine bonnet, cover fenders, disconnect battery
2)remove the steering wheel and disconnect the wiring harness at the connectors
3)disconnect the steering shaft lower end from the universal joint by by removing the top cotter pin.
4)remove the bolts attaching the lower column civer to the toe board
5)remove the three bolts holding the mounting bracket to the i9nstrument panel
6)carefully withdraw the steering column assembly from the vehicle.

ive also got step by step instuructio9ns to dismantle the steering column andand to remove the intermediate shaft and steering gear assemblys if you wanted them. just ask and ill put them up
