Has anybody investigated alternative fuel tanks for their LH - UC Toranas? I was thinking along the lines of a tank that has a recess in it for the spare tyre. The thought being to cut a big hole in the boot, drop the tank in and you then get a cheap, larger capacity tank AND you still have somewhere for the spare tyre to go. I personally would be looking for some thing that holds 70 - 90 litres of fuel and would handle a 185/75R14 tyre on a 6" wide rim.
Any thoughts?

I was thinking of getting an original tank and splitting it....... then welding in a band to increase the capacity and making new straps
But I might be getting back the drop tank that came out of my car so we'll see

Ford XA-XC tanks and ford station wagons up to EL i think are about 72l and have a wheel well in them that take a 185 tyre easy, they are alloy ones not plastic. They are fairly wide though so would kind of look like a drop tank depending on how you mount it. Only prob i see is that the fuel inlet is from the side. So you'd definitely need modding to fit in a torana.

My first thought was the XA - XC Falcons. My second thought was they would be way too wide. I realise factory tanks can be modified, but I'd rather this discussion was kept to factory tanks. Mainly for simplicity and costs sakes. I was thinking along the lines of maybe using a Sigma tank, as they ran a 175/75R14 tyre on a 5.5" wide rim. However, I'm unsure what the capacity of these tanks are.

There are a few of these around. Not sure where the spare goes though as I never asked.

That's what I have Herne, the top part of the tank is the same as standard so there are no issues with the spare.

This may be of some help:
There was a guy on the old forum trying to do that(increase the size of a standard tank buy cutting and shutting two normal tanks) cant remember his username..... id offered him a uc tank as a donor, but when he looked at he realised, the LH/X tanks are different as they have an indentation for the spare wheel.

I am well aware standard tanks can be modified. I'm interested in a tank that is recessed for the spare, so a piece of plywood etc. can be placed over the top so I can have a flat boot floor without having a tyre being in a daggy location.

Herne/Flamenco - there are two types of these factory long-range tanks.
80L - deeper bottom half.
100L - as above with band in the middle.
Dats - HDT in Sydney were going to band my tank but they no longer have the original jig, so can only do straight cut tanks - eg. Commonwhore. Torana's have the tank split on an angle, so while not impossible to do, it becomes more complicated.
I was buying a 100L one from V8Gent until it was stolen from the workshop where the remains of Agent Orange were being kept.
Also missed out on one on Ebay.
If you see any around...........
Grant..
