ok, heres the story. dad just brought himself a jeep cherokee, and is amazed at the lack of fuel echonomy. its even worse than my torana. so he's been thiking about one of those hyclone things.

personaly i think the idea is a pile of garbage, the swirling of the air to reduce turbulence is definitaly a fair theory, but thats about it. one bit that gets me from there website i find really intreagueing....

By using sensors like Air Flow Meters on the inlet and O2 sensor on the exhaust, the engine's ECU will match the air/fuel ratio and create a new fuel map. The ECU will need time to re-learn (about a week) this is why dyno shops who test products by doing one run without, and one run with any product don't know how to use a dyno on an EFI car (as proven in the Street Commodore magazine test on our More Power page). You will use less fuel to achieve and maintained the same speed. A second Hiclone will give a further increase in airflow.

now, i realize that the ecu can compensate a little bit for changes with the oxygen sencor, but theres no way in hell they can remap themselves. i tryed explaining that to dad but he just gave me a blank look.

imo, that sounds like bull. and if that part is bull then the rest probably is, but whats your oppinion??

I tested one years age on a VN Commodore and then on my dad's Volvo and it made absolutely no difference to either car. They normally sell them with a K&N filter which can make a slight difference that they hope you will think is the Hyclone.

Complete waste of money and time and can actually void warranty.

ok so thus far the consensus agrees with me, complete bullshit.

the problem is dad has a habit of believing everything he reads and never listening to me, he's slowly learning that i do know a little bit when it comes to cars but its taking him a while.

i've just told him the comments and he just muttered something and strolled off, i doubt he'll buy one :P.

Hyclones are rubbish and the laughing stock of 4WD forums.

Monash Uni and Choice Magazine did an article on them...they actually increased fuel consumption...run away! run away!!

Ok..I beleive they have their place..but not on any post 86 car...most modern cars cars have a stack on money poured into the design of the intake system...if a little bit of stainless is going to do all these flash things then they would use them from new...and now some are (I just don't know who) but the simple fact is unless they are designed for it, its not going to work.

Some cars do learn how you drive..my grandparents have a 94 excel that goes like a slug when we get it and goes like a rocket when we give it back....its not that it reprograms its self...its all factory mapping.

I love how they say dyno operators don't understand how to test them..they know how to test other mods to intake and fuel system..just not this one? :fool:

True, increased fuel consumption with NO horsepower increase at all.

Hiclone creates a swirling cyclone or tornado like effect to the airflow into the intake manifold and combustion chamber of any engine...
...A second Hiclone will give a further increase in airflow.

It's bloody brilliant!
I put two in our chimney last Christmas and increased the number of Christmas presents by 20%.
Mind you, a couple got broken because the were still swirling when they hit the fireplace... :tease:

Mmmm, do they provide warranty when the engine injests the little buggers?

Personally I'd put more faith in a Redline Manifold, although fuel economy may not be better, grin on face will.

If you carry around 2 tonnes of steel, rubber and two diff's you gotta expect poor fuel economy, may as well buy a V8 and benefit from increased performance, better handling, and lower maintenance costs. As always, just my opinion.

As I remember it, all the hyclone claims to do is burn the fuel better/ more completely, but any computer controlled fuel injected car already has practically zero HC(unburnt fuel) emissions, so what could it possibly achieve.

Mmmm, do they provide warranty when the engine injests the little buggers

This is just in jest, but I think you mean ingest.

Indeed I do. You are right about EFI or computer managed engine systems, hence why if you drop one of those babies in you automatically comply/exceed our ADR 27A requirements, even without cats. Depending on how good the computer is, they check a few hundred times a second to ensure the best possible burn. Be a pretty dud computer if it took a week to adjust, maybe that's only cars running old XT/AT processors.

If they were that shit hot why don't new cars from the factory have them fitted.
Then the car companies could brang how good there fuel usage is
