Any idea how a locksmith will open a boot lock that has been destroyed with a screwdriver?
Can it be done without destroying my panel work?

On HQs you can remove the boot lock from the outside but im not sure about Toranas.
Have you asked a locksmith if they can open a damaged lock, they would know, a phone call wont cost much.
Ive locked keys in a car and it cost 70 bucks to get them out.

With my UC and i'm pretty sure its similar with LX you can unscrew the lock retainer tab from underneth the boot lid. Just drop down the number plate flap and look up should be 2 screw on a U shaped tab holding in lock. Get them out then its a matter of trying to pull the lock mechinism out. This is how i changed boot lock on the UC when i got it anyway.

This is the LH lock assembly. On the HQs you can undo the 2 screws holding the retainer and remove the lock.

This is how I had to do it on the stuffed one on my old a9x...

Drill out the lock till you get to the gap (pretty sure this is still the same for LC/LJ)

Should look something like this:
Posted Image
I used a anglegrinder to make a small slot head screwdriver that would fit inside the hole I drilled...

To remove the lock do what was said above and remove the two self tappers under the bootlid...

Thanks gents, Yeah, the LC lock is exactly the same as the LH diagram pictured, I have removed the lock from the boot before, but not while it was closed :P

Flamenco, Thanks for that. I'm not sure what it is you do with the flathead to turn the mechanism once the lock is drilled out.. Perhaps can you PM me?
I don't think any of us want kiddies running around with drills and screwdrivers opening our primative locks :)

Thanks again.

My UC ended up with lock drilled and a bike chain lock. Now that fooled the kids with the drills and screw drivers!!

The flathead screwdriver is just used to turn the latch... If you see the diagram JBM posted, the flat rod coming out the end of the lock is what usually turns the centre of the latch.

You can take out back seat, use socket, nuckle, extensions taped together (to prevent them from falling into boot) and ratchet. You can undo the the lock bracket
and open the boot. A bit of patience and Bobs y u.

Back seat, just buy a Supercheap (supernasty) 900mm extension for $20 and undo the bolts to the catch. Works on LH-LX & A9X 4 doors, haven't tried LC/LJ.

Goes without saying that you'll need a 1/2 in(what else) socket on the end of that 900mm (Can you really get them that long?)extension bar! Perhaps not if you have the rare limited edition metric UC version.:stirpot:
Suggested this method a while back as an alternative, have used the undo the lock from under the boot sill some time ago........must have worked, but cant remember how hard it was to undo the screws etc. Has someone actually done the extension bar method with success, I havent tried it, would need to find a very long 3/4 inch drill bit to get through the gas tank first :nada:

This is the time you wish you brought a hatchback instead, very easy to do in a hatchback, no drilling required, sedan=ouch

Yes and yes. 900mm extension bars, and I've successfully done it to one of our members cars. The best thing about this method is nothing gets damaged.

Only other requirement is to have a double jointed neck while you look through the top hole, and stick your arm through the bottom one. Don't know how many holes or the config in the LC/LJ's.

There's two holes behind the lateral section of the seat in LC/LJ's - only just big enough to fit your hand through!
