Alright, heres the deal. Im looking at buying a red 202. But im wondering if my Yella Terra head thats on my 186 at the moment will bolt straight on, or whether bore is different. And if it all is well and the head does bolt straight on, should i worry about the compression ratio. Im mainly concerned on whether or not the head will fit. Thanks for any advice.

I heard that XU1 202s had 186 heads on them to increase the compression.

Yes, it does bolt straight on.

Yes, it will increase your compression.

Yes, I would like to buy it now for a carton.

yes it will bolt straight on.

No it will not increase your compression..compression will be the same (provided deck heights are the same and if 186 has stock flat tops and 202 has stock dishes)...179,186 and 202 had open chamber head...the small kidney shaped head could be found on 161 ect...I am lead to beleive the 161 head was the basis of the Xu1 head.

got it in 1.

you will need to run 186 pushrods though as the are a different length

when you swap the head..use the pushrods from your old motor in your new one.

I've heard people say the camber in the 161 head isn't as good as the chamber in a 179/186/202 head, so if you want the extra compression shave the 186 head rather than put a 161 head on. What do others think of that?

From what i can understand the only advantage with going with a 186 head over a 202 head is the 186 has screw in studs for the rockers which is handy for putting adjustable rockers in.

That's what my engine bloke says too. He reckons they "flow" better and if you think about it it's all about how much you can get in and out. He reckons you can get ample compression by shaving head and decking block.

hi we are running red 202 block and red 202 low comp head the head originaly had non adjustable rockers on it not now it has 7/16 studs but we have a large solid can and we still have more than enough piston to valve clearance as we are running 11.1 to 1 comp the machine shop had to take dont quote me on this i think .070" of head to get the chamber cc that we wanted. :spoton:

Thanks Hayden

Thanks for all the input guys. Was speaking to a mechanic today, and asked him the same question, and he was 75% sure that the bore is different between the 186 and red 202. This kinda put me off a bit. He also mentioned to me about the 161 ci motor, and told me that they can go well with a bit of work. Im not overly keen on the 161 motor but am interested in using a 186/202. All this discussion about shaving heads etc has made me really want to just stick with the 186. It sounds easy. Less hassle. Thanks for all the help guys. :spoton:

Heya guys. they sure do have the same stroke, lol, just read it in a GTR book that i got. stroke is 3.625 inches for both motors. Strokes different, the 186 is 3 inches exactly and the 202 has a stroke of 3.250 inches. Thanks for that fellas.

I wouldnt have that mechanic doing too much to my engine.....

I wouldnt be dismissing a mechanic just because he(or she!) doesn't know the ins and outs of what fits what on 30-40 year old red motors. Perhaps you need to get advice from someone who knows all that........this forum is probably one of the best places!

exactly, if he didnt know the ins and outs of the engine that was working on, that would be reason enough for me to go elsewhere
