Hey Folks,
Just wondering if there is a difference between an LX Torana coupling to a HQ-HZ one?
Ive gotta get another one for mine, and new ones on eBay are about $100 for a torana compared with $50 for a HZ.
Im also inquiring what options are out there for couplings on a V8 with Pacemaker extractors, as the coupling is a little close to the extractors for a urathane replacement.

Cheers

Fit onto different sized shafts.

Torana is 14mm dia and uses cotter pins to lock it on.

HQ/HZ (not sure if they are all the same) go onto a splined shaft that's about 18mm in diameter.

This is for the flexible coupling not the uni-joint, but the shaft diameters would be the same. Outside diameter of the flexible coupling is 72mm (Torana) 81mm for the other.

Been there and made that mistake. Have new flexible couplings for both - and only own a Torana.

Also, with the HQ/HZ coupling I have here, you need the other half as it is bolted together and not complete like the Torana.

Now I just have to put them both back into their right boxes. Time to find the parts manual.

I have used a second universal joint on mine instead of the coupling - they almost fit straight in - just a few mm trimmed off the end of the steering rack shaft and away you go.

The Urathane ones melt rather quickly too. Do you know if the ones on Evilbay are GM parts or aftermarket copies. $100 is a good price if they are GM part and new.

Toranamat69 - thats a clever idea..it would prevent any play in the steering caused by a worn coupling. but anther uni joint is the same price as a coupling i think.

EXLXSL - thank mate..that cancels the idea of using a HZ one..(i couldnt see the pline on the coupling pic on ebay)

HatchmanSS76 - I have seen the occasional NOS coupling on ebay for around $100...i guess I will have to pick up one of these...if your in the market and track someone who has a number of these please let me know...and I will do the same. That way we wont have to bid against each other and pay ridiculous prices

There is also the option of using the same idea the urathane ones use...but instead of using the urathane...find some converyer belt rubber, it is basically the same material the original couplings are made of....
