Just bought a set of hotwire mags but the paint on the inside of the spokes and centre are faded. I intend to paint them black but does anyone have a suggestion on type of paint eg: gloss or flat and how to do paint eg: brush or spray. Also tips on masking up the mags. Any information appreciated.

Thanks Steve

I had mine done at galaxy products in Cavan. They used to advertise in the Trader all the time. Was only $120 for all for rims. That was painted two colours and polished. % years ago now so would cost more now. From what I can tell they used a gloss paint and I know they did mask up the wire parts.
It would be a prick of a job to do yourself I think. Masking would take abit of time as you would have to cut the excess tape with a very sharp knife section by section. As far as cleaning them up I think a blast with a pressure cleaner would be best and than blast with compressed air. Painting with a brush would garentee a more even cot of paint but the finish would not be as good as a can/gun.
All up it will be a bugger of a job to do yourself as I know they are a prick of a wheel to clean when your wanting the car to look smick. Having said that, it's worth it in the end as they are one of the best looking rims on Toranas. Good luck with which ever way you pick.

I've just recently had 4 hotwire mags polished and painted here in Adelaide.
Extensive Wheel Service on South road in Richmond.
Superb Job, cost about $120 each though.
Place across the road from them wanted $250 each!

I used a spray can of mag wheel paint when i painted my rims. I sanded them lightly with some sandpaper then masked them up and sprayed them. They arn't hotwires, but this might give you an idea. The worst part was masking them.

Its not perfect but for around $10 or whatever the can cost and a few hours work I am quite happy with the result.

If you take it to someone, avoid Galaxy, they had a set of my wheels for weeks and weeks. All they managed to do was take the rims off the centres and feed me a load of bullshtit excuses.

If I was going to do them myself,
- Clean them up with a pressure cleaner and a good degreaser.
- Forget masking the centre, just do the rim
- paint them up
- unmask and grab some fine W&D and sand off the over spray
- Grab a drill mount polishing kit from the local hardware and shine them up

think you guys might be makeing the job harder than it is by masking up the spokes individually. :D

Polish the rim outers and the edge of the spokes.
Then I would pressure clean them then give them a good prepsol.
Mask the rim outer, then mask straight across the front of the spokes, covering it comletely so no overspray can get through.
Turn the wheel over and spray paint it from the inside. :spoton:
Remove the masking tape and should be all good!

Cheers Greg..

hey, some good ideas there....

i like the one of spraying from the back. that sounds good!!!

not saying this is the best way, but this is how i did it.

get them polished.....

then mask up the outer rim and tyre for over spray. i used heaps of little pieces of masking tape about 15mm long, masking a tiny bit of the inside of the rim at a time. using the straight edge of the tape to ensure a good cover. wen u stick them down, it will give u a good straight edge for about 6-8mm, then using the next piece stuck half over the first bit, u eventually cover the whole wheel.

then, just spray the whole thing, and using a rag with metho on it, wipe the top of the spokes off to get rid of paint.

thats how i did it... and they came up nice. will post some pics tomorrow.

dont know if u were able to follow those rough instructions...

anyways, if u want more detail, msg me

Cheers SXCLX

SXCLX is spot on the money! Same method I use... just make sure you wipe the paint off the spokes quickly before it has time to go off. Bugger masking up the spokes individually, what a pain that would be!! Especially when there is no need to.

Interesting reply SXCLX. When you sprayed the spokes did you use a spray gun or can? Also what type of paint did you use?

wipe a thin layer of grease over the spokes and rim and spray. After it has dried wipe off and clean up. Take your time and u should get a good result
