173 2.8l LD# 1, 2, 3 or 6
1.9l Opel L16
The VIN engine letter code for an L34 is "Z", a 308 is "T", a 253 is "R", a 202 is "L" and a 173 is "D".

Thanks for the info ,Im off to have a look at a Torana in a chook shed, the guy just said "all i know is that my uncle bought it new and its a 30.. somthin or rather
a A2X or sumthin like that, come and have a look" so witha bit of luck it might just what im lookin for.
