Thinking of removing my right hand compliance plate (one with LX8VD69 or others). I know it's illegal but I know a few blokes who have GT's & have been doing it for years. Their reasoning is that if someone steals their cars than at least there not worth as near as much on the black market without the JG33/66 compliance plate. The owners believe that if they never seen their beloved cars again at least they get some comfort in knowing that the bastards who stole them want get anywhere near what there worth (some small justification, instead of none they reckon). We all know that because these cars are going throught the roof in prices if anyones going to steal then, nows as good a time as any. Your thoughts? :<_<:

I always thought it was a good idea, there are arguements for and against. If someone steals your car, more then likely the tags will get destroyed anyway because they can't register it with those tags, they will get caught.

Back in 1996 one of our club members had his car stolen. In about 2000 or there abouts I was at a local Holden dealer and they had a nice Torana on the lot. I went for a look, and the tags said LH 202 auto, but they car was an A9X. I went right over it and suggested they remove it as I believed it was stolen. They told me they did a REV's check and it was ok. Typical, you'd think a dealer would know what REV's meant, and anyway they tags and numbers were all ok anyway. Anyway I looked in the club newsletter and it looked like our members car (right down to the speakers on the parcel tray) so I rang the owner and asked some questions. Everything matched (even the signature in the boot which he had pics of) so we called the police and he got his car back. They even caught the guy, but his car will never have the tags again. They removed them and destoryed them, but they took the chassis number and engine too anyway, even if he had removed the tags prior, the car wouldn't match up. So, at the end of they day, propably easier to avoid the hassle and leave them on because not much chance you will get the car back anyway

Technically they should be there. As to the full legalities, I'm not sure, but if you don't have tags (as in stolen) they stamp a new number in your car....

i wouldnt think it would be, as long as your engine number is stamped and you have a chassis number, im sure the police would understand...

thats what i thought, the authorities arnt concerned if your 76 SLR has the original motor or not their only concern is if its a legit car and engine and chassis number should do it.

The 2 XB GT's I posted pics of on another thread have both had the tags removed and hidden away for all the reasons outlined in here. I am really starting to come around to their way of thinking. If its gets stolen it makes it worth so much less to the thief.

if only we could put some form of gps in our cars. So if they go missing we can track them straight down!

A friend of mine has a GPS tracker, that is linked to the alarm. You put a sim card in it and you can "call up" your car to check on its status and location. It will also automatically ring you if there is an intrusion e.g broken window, open door etc. It's cheaper than the QuikTrak system...the only difference being with QuikTrak, they do all that stuff for you + notify police + guide police + immobilise the car once its safe too.

My car does not have tags and it is fine with just the body number and engine number. I would remove the tags just for keep sakes in the event your car is stolen and never returned. Regardless whether its worth less or not, because as Red outlined, thieves will rebirth it without the tags.

On my XU1 I removed them then had an engraver do up acrylic ones exactly the same..it was easy and cost me $20....They engrave from the back and put in all the numbers...even the GMH Lion logo....I put the real ones in a safe and attached the acrylic ones...Still a good idea I reckon.

My gtr hasn't had tags on it for more than 20 years, guess it was common back then for people to steal tags.

I've had mine removed for 11 years, had a "random" roadside inspection once and the cops were'nt too worried about the plates not being there as I voiced the same opion as above and they agreed.

The only number the authorities in NZ use is the VIN. So you can remove the tag with L31 or L34 on it with no hassles. In fact you don't even need the VIN tag. I had the vin off another car of mine I was painting once and I just wrote it on with a felt tip and all was ok.

Some guys I know remove the tags because really that is the reason the car will get stolen. A SL/R 5000 without the tags could just be a 1900 shell with a 308 in it and there are hundereds of them around.

trouble is they have to flog the car first to find out youve removed the tags. so if its going to get nicked its going to get nicked.wether theres tags on it,a dead body in the boot or full of groceries you lose the lot. keep nostalgic cars in the condition they came in i reckon.
as for cops ,the dept. of trans(etc),they dont care about tags.
i have a vacationer wagon that was stolen and the tags nicked 3 owners prior to me. for years that car has only had its engine and chassis recorded on paper work.

Had my tags off car for ten years and never had any trouble with the law. Had Mr Plod look over car a couple of time and they never said a word.

does anyone know why there is a hole the size of your index finger in the body under where the tags are?
