HI
i am in the process of changing my fuel system on my V8 LX.

At the moment it has a swirl pot on the bottom of the tank, with some fuel hose runnign the fuel up to the pump / filter which is on the RH chassis rail behind the rear wheel.
Its a good set up and work well , however i am paranoid about someting hitting it and also it sticks out to much! So i want to run the pump and filter in the boot.

I was justr wondering that sort of pump is recomened that can :LIFT the fuel from the bottom of the tank into the boot , probably 10 - 12 inches. and then out the boot and to the engine!

Its to a work 253 and it currently revied 5psi of pressure!

Cheers
Barns

What pump are you using now with your current setup?

I'll be interested to hear myself what people suggest you use for this, because whatever pump you choose, it will be working hard if it has to lift the fuel 10 to 12 inches as well as pushing it up the car. I wonder if a surge tank may help in this situation with a dedicated lift pump just to fill it, and then a second main pump. Just thinking out loud. But hopefully there are some suitable pumps that can do what you what here. Keeping it simple is always a lot nicer.

im just wondering why you need that kind of setup with a 253, seems like overkill? Surely a mech pump can hold 5psi?

so are you running a surge tank at the moment. if not than you would need a facett pump (5-7) PSI to pump to the surge tank, and then another pump to pump to the engine.

having said that......gotta say, unless it a ''off its head'' 253 making 300hp, why would you bother, remember it costs money to set it up right, facett pump alone is $100+hose+clamps+fittings+special sealant=bigger dollars than you would have suspected.

not to mention that you have to engineer a surge tank to make it legal.

and it takes time to setup right.

my 2 cents.

i just did this on my efi uc, so im speaking from experience.

cheers

You sure you got a swirl pot in the tank? If so, what for? What is wrong with an original fuel tank/pump system?

A 253, you dont need a complex fuel system, just run a mechanical pump off the engine and the original fuel lines, dont make life hard :spoton:

Ok lets ignore its a 253

Lets say its a big Chev that needs a lift pump and pressure pump

Like mine

How about just putting the fuel tank in the boot?

Just put the original factory fitted mechanical fuel pump .

As for putting bigger fuel pumps , etc..... all the high horsepower motors actually run off mechanical fuel pumps not electrical.

I use a boot mounted 130gph Mallory as both the lift and surge tank (engine bay located) pump (unregulated). Twin Bosch injection pumps draw from the surge tank to the injection rail (regulated at 70psi)

Then I would run a mechanical pump off the engine but run a minimum 3/8-1/2" fuel lines. Electric pumps suck, but I am forced to use one with the LS1, but if given the choice go mechanical, but I would run a regulated return style fuel setup to prevent fuel vapour lock etc from heat.

I dont even run a lift pump or surge tank and my LS1 runs at 60psi fuel pressure, you guys are only running 5-7psi with your carbies. But I only go to 6,800rpm and Im not a big fan of doing 200kph around corners on the street, maybe if it was for track use I would then fit a tank and lift pump, but if it works without why have 1?

LS1LX is on the money, its a pain to setup. only reason why it should be done is if you have fuel surge issues. i have a drop tank and had issues so i could either keep it 50% or more full or the EFI pump would run dry and be very noisy, so i put a surge tank in.

I was intending to run my LS2 with a swirl pot ( Brown Davis Tank ) but not a surge tank with a Bosch 044 EFI pump mounted wherever I could find space. I got talked out of it by someone who claimed that serious damage can be done to the motor if it leans out due to fuel surge at high rpm .

The same person also talked me out of having the surge tank in the engine bay. They claimed that in an accident it would be dangerous to have a litre or two of fuel in the engine bay. I am not sure that I agree with this logic and have not had time to check if it will be legal or not.

I am also not keen on fitting a surge tank or fuel pump in the hatch or boot for safety and noise reasons.

My current plan is to fabricate a surge tank inside the Brown Davis tank. Mount a VL style pump in the front of the tank with the pickup in the swirl pot and the output connected to the surge tank. Then reshape the spare wheel cutout section of the tank to provide space for mounting a Bosch 044 EFI pump with a filter on the chassis rail then a regulator after the fuel rails with a return line using the original Torana pickup back into the tank.

instead of running a surge tank i was thinking i may get away with running one of those large screw on fuel filters (the one like an oil filter), do you think it would have the capacity to overcome problems with a carb system and electric pump.

I got the exhuast done yesterdya and the exhaust bloke couldnt belive how loud it was, he was blown away but the noise , he said hes never heard a 253 that loud after putting a system on it ! so we will try some differernt mufflers on monday!

I will post some pics up of thework i haev done when i am happy with it!
