How much horsepower do you want to make?
Carbie or fuel injection?
Street or street/strip?

Yeah maybe if you shop around definatley go with the VN heads and a later model block but add on top your extractors and manifold either harrop or tourqe power 750 carb i say a barry grant thats what i got does the job nice to give you a idea i got a brand new VT block harrop crank eagle H beam rods SRP forged pistons rollmaster kit bearings rings and gaskets to suit for $5000 but thats pretty much best of the best add on top your cam lifters pushrods add another $1000 then your heads theres another $1000 atleast then someone to put it all together ??? belive it adds up and thats hopefully a 480-500 hp combo

Then also a fuel and ignition system to support the engine, as well you will have to look at the driveline to see if it will handle the power you want to put through it, plus being able to stop it as well.

To give you an idea, i just completed a 355 Stroker, and the bottom end alone cost me $8K, that is purchasing the stroker kit complete, i.e crank, pistons, bearing, rings, rods, then new timing cover, rollmaster chain, oil pump, crow cam and lifters, gaskets and the machine work invloved in it all.

I have ported VN heads with a 750 Vacsec Holley and Torque power manifold (price of these not included in $8K mentioned above) and the car goes good, i havent dynoed it yet, but would expect to get some good horsepower out of it!

Also remember that if you are going VN heads, you need to purchase the correct extractors and make the changes to the exhaust.

We are doing a 355 at the moment for a customer, he supplied a bare block, timing cover, stripmaster manifold and bare YT -3 alloy heads. All up his is going to cost around the $11,500-12,000 mark, but will be capable of running 11.2s in a full weight HQ sedan.

What sort of Hp you expecting and at what comp?

The solid flat tappet cam ultimately will be what limits its horsepower, but the aim is for approx the 480hp at the flywheel, by 6500rpm. It is a combo we've done and had success with in the past, with a solid roller stick I'd hazard a guestimate and expect 530 or so from the same combination. Compression ratio is 10.8:1

Combo sounds great, it is something that I want to build for mine. I have been thinking about a 370 combo, Crankshaft Rebuilders 3.625" crank, 6" rods and ACL pistons, have you built any of these combos?

Is that on pump fuel (PULP) or Avgas?

I'd not really like to run such a short pin height in a street engine, running a 5.7 rod would give a pin height of ~ 1.290" which would be more suitable I'd say.

Crankshaft rebuilders are definately the way to do as far as the best nodular cranks are concerned, although the wait time can be infuriating sometimes.

For those who are interested, Eagle have just released a crank for Holdens, 355ci combo with H beams, crank, forged SRPs will be under $2000 we estimate, or about $500 cheaper than similar with a Harrop crank.

Food for thought. :)

How is the quality of the Eagle crank and what Hp will it support?
What type of H-beams will be available with the kit?
Obviously the kit for that price doesn't include bearings?

Is that on pump fuel (PULP) or Avgas?

That's with 98 octane unleaded.

The cranks are rated to 500hp, Harrop rate theirs to 450, and a Crankshaft Rebuilders nitrided item is rated to 600hp.

However there are plenty of cars out there making more with both Harrops and C/R cranks. The rods and pistons are rated to 700hp, you can upgrade to ARP2000 or L19 bolts if you so choose.

Yes, I know of 3 355's in Commodores running in the 10s with Harrop cranks.

And Brad at Crankshaft Rebuilders mentioned a few turbo'd 355's making close to 1000hp with one of their nodular cranks.

Would you say that you could safely build a reliable 500HP combo with the Eagle kit? or piece all the parts together individually.

I would say that with VN heads and the Eagle kit, you'd make 500hp on pump fuel with a roller cam. :)
