now that my torry is running, its time i looked at getting a trailer for her.

i was thinking of a small tandem just long enough for the torana (maybe a bit longer so i could squeeze on a commo if i had to).

Then a mate who is into boats said i could get away with a single axle due to the weight of the car (around 1100kg?) and suggested some form of tilting.

also, to keep it low, i thought of using soft springs so it bottoms out on bump stops when the car is on it. strapping the car on via its wheels/diff should allow the cars suspension to give it a comfortable ride.

Instead of a full flat bed, the idea of basically 2 ramps spaced apart as the deck would give me access underneath. (like an excavator trailer)

has anyone got any ideas or plans/pictures of their own trailers?

would the single axle be OK?

You may as well get a tandem... More stable, better balanced, and they'll hold more weight.

If you get one with 2 ramps, you won't be able to use it for anything but hauling your car around. A car trailer is a bloody handy thing, but even handier if you can use it to cart whatever else you may need.

Dad and I built a trailer in 2005. Not sure of dimensions, but its plenty big enough to pull our HK around.

I'll get a couple of pics this weekend.

yea i was thinking about this the other week and thought u could rig up a flat piece of solid wood or steel and lay that across in the base of the trailer giving you a flat trailer for what ever you want to throw in. only needs to be held in with 4 bolts, and then when comes race day just undo the 4 simple bolts, take that sheet of steel out, simple.

Yeah, true. Depends what you want to use it for. If it's going to be mostly for towing a race car around, its probably better off making it open bottomed.

We have Pits to work under our cars, and the trailer is technically a work trailer, so we had to make it solid bottomed.

I saw one at Sandown on Sunday that did that. While every one else was fiddling aroung with blocks of wood he just drove straight up. As the car moved forward on the trailer it just tilted it self down at the front and he was away.

Single axle sounds good to me too but what about a blow out?

reckons it would be easy to adapt to single axle if i want, so for $30 i'll grab plans and have a look.

One tip from experience-make the drawbar as long as legal/possible; so much easier to tow and reverse it's not funny-id reverse my car trailer into spots i wouldn't try to put my 6x4!AND dont kid yourself with the tyre situation; yes, recaps are cheap but 8 ply light truck tyres last heeeeaaps longer and its no fun havin a blowout with yr nice car on the trailer at open road speed.

the best tandem we owned had a spare wheels rack across the front and tool boxes built into the areas forward and aft of the mudguards. one of the boxes carried jacks and one tie downs etc. one for tools and the other was lined with coolite and used as a drinks esky. puuurrrfekt.

You see some pretty simple good looking trailers at the track. If only I had my camera there the day I saw one in particular. Maybe it'll be back there this year.
