When looking at the id tags what numbers should be looking at and on which tag.

5th Letter in the VIN should be an L/M.

L32 on the plate on the passenger side on the fire wall, bottom left corner.

And on the tag on the p/s the model should be 8VD69 for a SLR model, not 8VC69 or 8VB69

L32 is a 253 or 4.2l engine code and is stamped on the Body ID plate along with the paint codes and trans and axle codes.

Your VIN should start with 8D69R... for a sedan and 8D77R... for a hatch.

The V8s were only available in SL/Rs os SSs.

For a Torana the engine no prefix should be HR....

JBM, thats not entirely true...

You could get 253's in SL Sedans and Hatches... 308's were exclusive to SL/R's and SS's.

Therefore your VIN could be:
8C69R... SL 4.2 LH/X Sedan
8D69R... SL/R 4.2 LH/X Sedan
8C77R... SL 4.2 LX Hatch
or
8D77R... SS 4.2 LX Hatch.

even the S could be had with 253 in the LH range.
