My wipers used to work fine, recently they have gbeen playing up.
When i turn them off, they stop where ever they are on my windscreen instead of returning to the bottom of the windscreen.

Would this be an issue with the switch, the motor or what?

Thanks

Also is it possible to buy a 3 speed switch for the wipers or would you haveto change the motor also>

There is a parking control thing in the wiper motor.

Check that the switch is done up properly against the dash and that the plugs aren't loose. With the windscreen wires - the switch casing and the motor's casing must be grounded properly, otherwise they will do the things you mentioned (stoppping in the middle of the windscreen). Check the fuse for the wipers also.

If there's no change in operation after that I'd be looking at the wiring itself or occasionally the main switch needs replacing (don't think so in this case though).

The way the wipers return to the windcreen base is all inside the motor. In the top section of the motor there is a large plastic gear - on the underside of the gear there is a pattern of steel pressed into it. This steel pattern forms part of the circuit for the wiper motor because there are contacts from the 4 wires on the motor's electrical plug that press against it... It's unlikely the motor is at fault - you could test it out of the engine bay if you wanted - without the linkages attached. Up to you. Only last thing I can think of is that the earth strap for the wiper motor is making good contact also.

The park switch is in the top of the motor. Take it apart, have a look and you'll see what we're talking about. Can't rightly remember how it is set up, but pretty easy to work out when you give the motor bit of a spin.

Short of that, get a new motor, although it's pretty easy to repair your problem, just needs bit of a fiddle.

Faulty switches usually cause no wiper action or like mine, loss of one of the wiper speeds/washers.

I would recheck the earth strap from the wiper motor body to the car body.

The part in the motor that parks the wipers is a simple little metal tang that slips into a dip in the gear once it reaches the parked postion. It may be a case of bending that tang back into place. I've had the same problem before.

Yup ^ something like that. It's a fairly simple little device, which is pretty self evident when you pull the motor apart.

Undo the nut where the arm turns and the gear can be pulled out...

if that little metal clip breaks off you can't do much as it isn't replaceable.

I you can switch off the wiper motor when the wipers are at their lowest.

Not that I'm aware of, but there may be aftermarket replacements. Repco would prolly be the best bet. Maybe should of said just put another one on.
