Hey guys,
On my 173 Red motor i have a 320 Holley carb, it came with an automatic choke. We didnt no how 2 tune it so we had a mate come up and have a look (he knows his way around them). He found that the fuel inlet valve was broken. My dad took the holley apart and swapped the fuel iunlet valve over from a 350 holley, at the time he changed it to a manual choke too.
Anyway this weekend i put it all back on and then we started the car...straight away i saw dads eyes widen and he yelled cut it off. the fuel was coming out of the breather hole at the top of the carby. he didnt know what had happened but we changed the float level because it was too high. we started it a third time and it was fine.
once we set up all the accel pedal we started it again and tryed to warm the motor up so we could get it to idle and adjust what we needed 2. BUT after about a minute after start up all the same problems came back.
we are really stumped atm and thought mayb someone out there could give us some help or direction.
Heres a few pics.
Carby
Thanks Matt

I dont know wether the float valve out of a 350 would work in a 320? I'd guess that it probably would.. but it sure sounds like that's your culprite.
I'd suggest going to your local parts store and buying a holley rebuild kit containing ALL gaskets, seals, needle valves etc etc and do a complete rebuild on the carby. I wouldnt just change one thing at a time.
grab a can or two of carby cleaner and go berzerk with it while cleaning it, and give that a go!

If the problem comes and goes, I'm tipping crap in the needle and seat. (Float valve)? isn't that found in a dunny?
Sorry, I sound like an absent member, call it what you like.

Needle and seat crap .
Take it to a good rep carby builder and not so called experts... well worth money spent less hitting head against wall dramas.
Either way tell us what you found.

Today just got back up to dads and we took the 320 off and replaced the seat and needle, put it back on and the same thing happened again after 5mins. I ended up cleaning the 350 and putting it back together (slowly) then hooked it all up.
Im probably one of the happeist people in the world at the moment, its been 5 years off the road and never started and today it ran for 15 mins (until we shut it off), ideling, revving doing everything it should. The only thing we changed was the 320's main jets into the 350, coz it was pouring petrol in at around 5000RPM, everythings sweet as!.
So HAPPY!!! Matt

nice to hear you got it working
but i think your culprit may have been the fuel tank and lines, not the poor old carby
you said the car's been sitting for 5 years?
if that's the case, your tank and lines would be full of crap. much like myself at times, according to mrs wabbit
