Today i was thinking how hard it would be to Chrome a whole car ,say a LJ or LC ,it would look awsome ,i wonder if it has been done before? You could break the car down to smaller pieces ,take off the panels and do them separately actual body would be hard though ,i wonder if they would have a tank big enough ?

years ago they woulda..now days not a chance. would look cool....but be illegal. not to mention you can't use bog when electroplating something...the whole car would ahve to be absolutley perfect bare metal pollished to within an inch of it's life. basicaly if it was possible it would cost about 4 million dollars and be only good at car shows.....but jezus it would be cool.

yeah, we got a chrome paint now, like camelion just chrome. it's 2k. it's illegal to paint a car in taht, but i forgot bout it...would work if you only wanted the car for show. you can paint bits in it though...gonna get some bits on mine done.

edit: that car has been computer rendered....trust me.

I saw a Ferrari F50 at maranelllo in Italy in the Ferrari Factory Mueseum which had its panels file finished and coated in clear except for the bumpers which were painted silver, that car looked the goods and would be possible if you had a straight enough shell to start from.

The Audi is real, I know it's real. I definately wouldn't count on the first Mercs having it but I agree with DJ that the Wagon looked more real. The Audi is owned by some really rich guy in that really rich middle-eastern country. Saudi Arabia or Dubai, man those fukn countries are loaded.

There are (as LCBOI pointed out very very good chrome paint now. There is a place that does this in Morwell. I have seen them at a few shows now. their final product does look good. they even had a v6 plastic covers done. looked a little orange peel but the mag wheel next to it was imaculate. so I am sure with a bit of prep it would be possible to chrome the entire car. However, there are two things which come to mind here.

1. There would be too much chrome thus a breakup colour maybe required and 2. the legalities... Chrome steering wheels are not road worthy nor is chrome tint so can you imagine the flack from teh whole car being chrome???

Cheers

I'm pretty sure the Audi is actually plated in silver. If you sure the place where that Arab lived you would understand. There was an email going arround with the car and his place that looked like a super exclusive hotel.

I saw a VX commodore ute that had something chrome applied to the whole exterior. I dont know wether it was paint or what it may have been but it was an auto sound show car from hornsby. ( I saw this car a few times when driving to and from work when hornsby westfield was being built.)

I dont think a fully chromed car would be legal at all ( seeing the anti glare legislation came in in 1974 and thats why you see VERY little chrome work any more...

Would look.. Ummmm... different!

Speaking of glare from chrome parts on cars ,i had an experience some years back ,i was driving into the sun along a country road heading towards Bussleton from Nannup in W.A and i was driving the GTR ,it was soon after i purchased it and it had a Chrome air deflector bolted to the stone tray .An oncoming car was flashing his lights and abusing the shit out of me as i slowed down he explained that he could see f#ck all because of the flash he recieved as i was aproaching him he could not be reasoned with ,all from a simple highly chromed air deflector. :furious:

If the Audi was polished or plated, how did they do the plastic bumpers?

Never heard of plastic chroming??? Have a look at some of the early commodores (most of the stuff has fallen off by not but it is simple as and not that disimilar to metal chroming...

Cheers
