I'd need to upgrade my braking package on the LC. At the moment I'm simply running some slotted discs and higher quality pads and the original drums at the back. I mostly use the car at Morgan Park, Qld, for sprints etc.

As I get really cheap 13" track tyres, I would like to keep the 13" rims. This, of course, restricts what I can do. I also don't want this to cost an arm and a leg (I need them when I'm driving).

What would you guys suggest? I'd need straightfoward 'nuts and bolts' type of advise on what to buy and how to go about doing the upgrade. Someone mentioned Volvo four spot calipers. If these are the way to go, what would I need for this conversion? I've heard of some of the NC guys running Volvo four spot calipers.

Also, how would I go about converting the rears to discs and what discs/calipers etc should I use? I'd like to keep the Torana stud pattern all around.

Any advise would be much appreciated!

I run commodore calipers with Pintara discs on the back of my racecar and its under 13" rims
Might be worth a look at that setup.
You need to have a handbrake ? If so maybe the pintara caliper too as it has the handbrake built into the caliper.

For the front the norm for Nc is the Volvo Girling 4 pot caliper on a BMW 3000 vented disc (DBA375- but they don't make it anymore...... shop around)
Its not a bolt on......and they machine the rotor down from 272mm to 256mm. There is some mucking around to make it all fit. But it does work
Theres at least 2 Nc car owners on this forum who should be able to offer advice on the how toos
Mind you I think one is running drum stubs and fabricated brackets and a different disc and the other is running BMW calipers

Hopefully someone else will chime in with some real advice.

dattoman, is that rear setup your using an easy conversion onto a torry ? does it need redrilled rotors or any special brackets etc .... i too an looking to upgrade brakes and im after a cheap easy option .... if i could keep the 13's that would save some money ...

I actually just got an interesting email from Peter Koning from Hoppers Stoppers. Sammy might also be interested in this.

They are looking at the possibility of fitting a HQ caliper and modified HQ rotor of slightly reduced diameter onto a Torana stub axle. This will give you ventilated HQ brakes, all as a bolt on. Apparently, there'll be a need, however, for a 10mm wheel spacer.

If they go ahead with this, the NC fellows could also use these as they are 'period' brakes.

They would supply the whole thing as a bolt on package.

That setup has been used before majuva
Its actually on the yellow car the Brock was running recently

As for the rear disc
Commodore backing plates bolt up to the flange on your diff
But you'd have to try your wheel on a Commodore first to see if everything clears.
Have to knock his studs out of the axle first though as the stud pattern is wrong.

Any model VB-VS will do.

ok so your saying it will use a HQ caliper, smaller diameter HQ rotor and will be drilled to torana pattern so then you can use 13 inch wheels on them ?

dattoman, im getting a VN-VS V8 LSD for another project so i will be able to use that for testing but why the pintara discs ? if the wheels fit over the commodore caliper, to me that would mean it will clear the disc aswell ?

Pintara disc is 260mm the commodore is 280mm
Thats just what I use on my racecar

I did email Peter at Hoppers and here was his response:

We have thought about this for a while as the Group NC Torana race cars have
the same problems, they need big brakes but have to use parts which were
made at that time and inside 13 inch wheels.

We have done a bit of experimenting and can see a way to fit a HQ caliper
and modified HQ rotor of slightly reduced diameter onto a Torana stub axle.
This will give you ventilated HQ brakes, all as a bolt on.

We set this up here with various 13 inch wheels and found that it would only
work with regular HR or similar offset wheels, not deep inset Torana steel
wheels.
and then only with a 10mm wheel spacer.The wheel must be straight through
from rim to centre at 13 inch size, not stepped down.

That means the wheel track will go out 20mm (3/4 inch ) per side. If you can
work with this we can look at pricing same.
14 inch would be no problem and would keep std track.

I assume you would want to keep original Torana stud pattern.
That means we start with a new blank HQ rotor, drill to early pattern and
turn the nose to 2.5 inch where the wheel sits.
Then modifiy the o/d, cost $250 each rotor.

HQ calipers are easy to find, allow $130 each reco.
wheel bearings are $20 a side, hoses $44 each

Good pads around $80 a set
Soons adds up to $968. can do slotted rotors for extra $100 a pair.

As I say, the main thing is the wheel must be straight through from rim to
centre to clear the caliper.

i guess this would be an ok option to allow you to have HQ stud pattern without the issues of HQ stub axles.

if its going to cost $1000 i've spend the extra and go the 290mm twin piston kit

Volvo 4 spots and vented rotor inside 13" wheel.
Straight forward really.
Caliper adapter plate on drum brake stubs.
Torana hub turned down slightly in diametre to suit Volvo rotor.
1/4" spacer with hub locator on outside of rotor.
1/2" wheel studs.
Turn down rotor to 10" OD.
Slight grinding on caliper to suit wheel weight clearance.
Modify caliper to have 1 fliud inlet instesd of 2.
Brake lines to suit.
CANNOT FIT SPRINTMASTETRS.
Wheel track increased by 15mm / side over standard.
Stops VERY WELL....

those adaptors look very similar to the ones i have to fit commodore brakes (VB-VK) onto a HR drum stub axle.

Did you drill the top mounting hole all the way through or just slightly deeper and then tap it. Why didnt you just use slotted DBA LH-UC discs or has it something to do with the rules. How thick is the plate you used

They were an option, I think just on SL/Es and they're rare as hell and I don't think they're in the same league as the Volvo 4-Pots or anything. I've seen some pretty ridiculous price tags on them as well.

UC replacement discs have been unavailable new for many years now. So once they get down to 14.7 MM, it's bin time. Mind you, the discs needs to be machined first before the final thickness can be determined.

this is the one i have .... only real noticable difference i can see is that mine has a counter sunk allen key bolt in the top hole .... as you can see in this pic it needs it for the disc to clear the adaptor....

these are vb-vk brakes by the way.

Only real noticable difference you can see....
UNTILL you try to get a 254mm rotor and 4 spot calipers inside a 13" wheel!
It's not that easy....
Everything fits.....JUST!

Nearly done this conversion,have machined hubs and adapter plate and outside diameter of disc....got the 4 spot calipers etc.....lucky there was an old volvo at work with all the rquired bits,wouldve been shame having to buy VOLVO parts from the wreckers!!!anyways was just wondering if it would be possible to mount onto a hq stubaxle,then i wouldnt need to fabricate a caliper mounting bracket?would this be correct?
