im speaking from experience here im a spraypainter by trade and ive done quite a few candies over the years, they are quite hard to spray and almost impossible to touch up, i would only recommend someone with a fair bit of experience or an extremely fussy meticulous person to try painting it, the panels must be prepared perfectly. the sides of the car must be painted by walking the entire car length, you CAN'T paint panel for panel or it will get dark patches between the panels where the paint has overlaped on each panel.
it is usually is painted over a silver or metalic gold base which must be painted perfectly even, no streaking, no dryness, no patches, or mottle ect.
you cant overlap too much any where on the whole car or it will go very dark in those places, the car must also be very very straight panel wise also. dents show up as dark patches because it changes the way the base coat reflects the light through the candy paint. get any of it wrong and it will look shithouse bigtime
im not trying to scare you off but you must know the facts about candie apple paints.
if the paint gets scratched say on the side no matter how small, the entire side will have to be completely repainted again
im happy to guide you through the process but you must be aware what your in for. :spoton:
in saying that, get it right and its one of the best paint finishes you will get.

1QuickLJ is exactly right..........whilst glamorous you really need to be a gun painter who's determined to get it right otherwise it will look average and no one will be impressed.

doesnt have to be painted over silver, can be painted over a range of colours, but most people as you say, choose silver. And the reason they had to repaint the car so many times, was simply because of what 1QUICKLJ said, overlad, dents even a run, causes it to mess up big time. Every time they pushed the car out into the sun there would be lines all over the thing, and the bloke that was painting it was no amatuer, he was a dam good painter.
