Hi fellow Torana enthusiasts, just wondering if there is a bush kit that you can buy for the steering collum in an Lx as mine seems a bit on the sloppy side.
I have replaced every other components in the steering system, recon rack new urethane bushes new tie rod ends and new ball joints.I can feel the steering shaft moving around inside the collum, can't find any mention of bushes in my Max Ellery vehicle repair manual or Rare Spares parts & price catalogue.
Cheers Bruce

There's actually a strange little bearing in the column that you can still buy from Holden, but it's an expensive little bugger, about $70 or something from memory. I replaced the one in mine as well, if you go to the trouble of doing the rest of the steering may as well do that too.

You have to pull the steering wheel off to get at it, it sits in the housing that holds the indicator stalk and associated hardware. You'll have to remove a little lip of metal that holds the old one in, with it's old age it comes out with relative ease.

I'll see if I can find the bag it came in with the part number, failing that someone at holden will be able to look it up for you.

I bought one - 20/05/2005 (at about 20 past 4).

P/n GM-7800269 BRG BAL 18/35

$30.35 with GST.

It doesn't really show it in the parts manual but if your Holden dealer has an old dude, he should nearly be able to just go out the back and get it off the shelf.

American autos have both the upper and lower bearings. Not cheap at ~$80 each.

OUCH. Search using the same GMH part number - $87.21 for us mortals who have to pay GST. The receipt I have here is either wrong or I was undercharged. American Autos price is better than Rares though - $100.29 with GST.

Very strange really as the inner and outer races (on the top bearing at least) are just pressed steel.

Yeah the bearing itself is not what I expected. I was originally just going to go find a proper roller bearing of the correct diamensions to put in there until I found the genuine unit.

Price has obviously gone up over the past couple of years!!
