my torana has a 5l vn fuel injected engine in it, the computer says code 12 systems pass. but it doesnt fire. fuel pumps seem ok, it cranks over fine. it only gives a non consistant, low spark. the coil has been replace. and we cant get to the distributer cause its way behind the engine. ive been told that the injection systems in vns are crap. im trying to get it running this weekend for our clubs power cruise. is there anyone who can come out to bullcreek and test the injector module?

check the voltage to your ignition module.
needs a good 12V or nothin will happen.
How long has the engine been in the car?
Was it running before in the car?
have you checked the pink wire at A6 onthe computer for 12v?
Can u hear the injectors clicking or not?

common problem with the VN's is the ignition module.
on the V8's, holden mounted this large transistor in the middle of the circuit board of the ignition module, mounted on the passenger side inner gaurd.

in time the solder joints fracture, creating an open circuit in the solder joint.
re-solder the legs, and hot glue the thing to the CB. or just re solder.

you need 20/20 vision, or a magnifying glass to see the hair line cracks.
I have 2 VN's, both did the same thing.
easy fix. expensive to replace.

consummed 3/4 bottle port, so excuse the wording.

I had simmilar problems, the ignition module was the last resort.
2nd time round, just went straight to the module.

inside the module, the thing is about the size of a 5 cent piece, with 2 legs soldered on the opposite side to the circuit board. you can't miss it! (TO3 housing from memory)

it may be something else though.
the dissy cap does come out, just! well from the VN!
but it is empty, so not much going on in there.
leave the coil bolted to the bell housing, and mount a new one somewhere else. much easier if you are replacing it.

as said before injectors all click together, (unless it is the later sequential type), so put a big yellow screw driver at each base and listen through the handle, then pull plug off. if it is working you will hear it.
unlikely your problem though if they are clicking

fuel pressure,re-VN, hose between fire wall and fuel rail will be soft in the morning, should be hard if fuel pressure is there after the ignition is turned on.
and you hear pump start, then stop once pressure reached.

once had a fuel pump fail, there was 2, low pressure in the tank, then high to the engine. some have 2, some have 1, high presure in the tank, no external pump.

pulled the sealed external pump apart to find the windings were spinning on the impeller shaft, as an emergency I used spider wire (80lb fishing line) and tied it around the pump unit and windings to get me going, that was 10 yrs ago, need to replace that one day! spider wire is good stuff.
remember there will be a high quality filter somewhere before the fuel rail.
o/k port all gone

I have over 350k's on one VN, never had an injector problem! but that one is on lpg.

had a coil lead go once, but you would of checked that before replacing the coil.

have a gen 3 with nearly 500k's on it with no injector problems either, dam, thats on lpg as well.

think the injectors run straight off the computer? no module!
ignition modules are crap though!

He gets chatty when he's had a few...... :spoton:
so basicly what you're saying is, that sometimes stuff happens to stuff and then it's stuffed?

if u have ur igntion on, remove the dizzy from the engine, and turn it by hand, you should hear the fuel pump turn on, injectors start clicking, and if ur getting spark u'll hear a popping noise likes its trying to fire.

also could be a stupid question but has caught a few out, does the ecu have constant power when cranking ? this would make a difference.

thanks for all the advice, we have sorted the problem out. apparently the injectors were only gettin 6v while cranking over instead of a full 12v. :fool: rewired it and now its working. will be running for the CTCC Power Cruise tomorrow. yay! :spoton:
