i have one on mine, my car overheats if its not moving. considering an electric waterpump. belts last pretty good as long as they dont rub on the edge of the alternator pulley

Overheating when not moving sounds more like an airflow problem through the radiator than a coolant flow problem. Have you considered putting a bigger engine fan and or thermo fans on?

when i used to have one on my 6 i had no issues, when the belt came off once due to the top alt bracket bending , it was then the water temp rised quickly due to not turning.

other than that no issues at all.

proper bracing of the alternator should fix it all up.

that overheating sounds like a fan and/or radiator problem

no worries then. im gonna get another bracket made up so itll be nice and strong. im beging to think that i may hav a problem with the coolling system being pressurised now more than anythnig else. need to co test it. just putting it off. little scared that my fears may come true of pulling the thing apart a third time.

also brace the back of the alt to the block, that will help heaps

i used a VL alternator bracket. much stronger.

due to the gilmer drive i dont have room to fit an engine fan or even a thermo fan. so i had to fit a thermo fan at the front of the radiator and blow through it.

this pic is before i fitted the VL bracket

Just a question, If your doing the belt up so tight that there is flex in the alternator brakett, do you really need to do it up that tight?

The belt and gears have teeth, its not like they will slip easily like the standard fan belt will if you don't do it up tight enough.

WHY-PSI are you sure the gear ratios are as per factory spec? There shouldn't be any other reasons for overheating just caused by having a different belt-drive system on.

I'm suprised by how little room you have; I've got a lot more in the LX but I wanna run Thermos at the front anyway I think.

Hey Ben, I have no dramas with the gilmer drive and cooling other than when I snapped a belt. Would sit for 20 mins idling, thermo running and sit on 160F. So I dont think there is a drama with your pulley sizes and ratios if they are the same as mine.

I have just build a new motor and very close to going in so i decided to go the whole hog with cooling so I got a davis craig electronic water pump and digital controller.

I don't need to run a thermostat, I still run the gilmer belt drive but have pulled the impeller off the water pump and will still leave the thermo set-up on a controller switch. I'm going to run the water pump a 80 degrees and set the thermo controller to kick in at 85 degrees. Thermo is a 14 inch Davis Craig one that is mounted on the front of the radiator blowing through and radiator is a 3 core desert cooler.

Hopefully all be sweet.

sounds pretty dam flash. hope you put some good pictures up of your setup.i wonder how much power you save running an electric water pump like that? did you have any dramas fitting you desert cooler with your giler drive? i have a 14" fan at the moment iwas going touse on my ally one but i cant fit it in. so if i can get two smaller fans to ruffly flow much air as the 14"davis craige fan i should be fine.

gilmer belts still have to be pretty tight ive noticed, if its not tight enough it makes a reallllllllllllllllly nasty noise then the belt skips

here is the VL bracket "in action"

you should just runn twin holden 6 brackets as per xu-1 bathurst specs..... solved my altinator flex problem... you need a longer bolts tho. but thats not a drama...

Ben - No Probs what so ever fitting the desert cooler in with the gilmer. As for belt tightness these should be able to be turned through approx 90 degrees, so they don't really seem to be all that tight, If it slips it must be extremely loose.

The VL bracket looks sweetand strong although I still run the standard bracket and don't have troubles as the belts don't need to be that tight, unless you want your gilmer to really scream, as the tighter it is the louder it is :D

cheers

Les
