Hi, first of all i know V8 conversions have been talked about alot here, i have searched and cant find the advice i am looking for.

I just pulled the 6 out of my LJ and am looking to put an 8 in, however i am not sure weather to go for a 308 or 350.

I am not looking for serious HP, nothing that you cant get out of a 308 i think (dont have the $ for lots of HP anyway :P).

I have read about it and i am keen on the 308 as it seems straight forward and theres lots of information, and old 308s seem to be cheap enough (over here in NZ).

Is there any reason to look at doing a 350? or anything else?

Thanks for the help

308 would probably be the easier conversion, and a reliable 300-350hp is not too big of an ask. I'd recommend going the VN headed route though, the horsepower they can produce is a long way in front of a set of early heads.

Down the track if you want more its only a stroker kit away. ;)

The first thing to do is to check what you can get registered in an LJ.

onefifty, I don't know what state in live in but make sure whatever motor you put in your car, it can be legally registered with it. There is abit of variance between the states and I know you will not get a 350 registered in NSW now (unless it was previously registered with a V8 in it.)

Do your homework before you spend your hard earned dollars.

Mick.

(over here in NZ).

Looks like his not in any of our states. From what i hear in NZ the laws are pretty easy going.

308 all the way, today you can make a 308 go as good as any smallblock, theres alot of after market go fast bits for them.

I've seen a 350 in an LC and it is extremely tight, the rear two plugs on either side had to be undone from underneath the car, not the easiest combo to work on.

Install platinum plugs, they only have to be changed every 100,000 KM or so.

Thanks for the replys, yes in NZ i tihk the rules are pretty relaxed compared to AUS.

So i take it that a 308 is the way to go? keep it holden aswell :)

Well, maybe not... If thats the case - i would have gone 308... You see, parts for the 308's may be around, but they certainly are not cheap. And you wont get the reliability out of a 308 that you would a 4 bolt chev motor.

If your not keen on spending the big bucks, you can buy a fully rebuilt 350 chev in the Just Cars magazine for shy of $4k, and considering you'll have oodles of torque to putt around on, plus a 4bolt bottom end, and the availability of CHEAPER parts - i'd go chev (oh hang on, i have!).

Personal choice though... I'll be running platinum plugs. The biggest expense is the parts you'll need to get it to fit - its just set and forget from then on.

Cheers
Keith

Just put platinum plugs in my commodore, wouldnt recoment them in something that could foul one or more, as they are really dear, retail is like 20 or 25 bucks each. we pay 12 bucks trade, and thats at the highest trade rating.

Keith he mentions that he doesnt have alot of money to spend and to fit a 350 it will cost more then a 308, you can pick up an EFI 5ltr for $1000 these days and all you need is a harrop manifold and a decent carb and you have your self a decent motor and a good base for some serious HP later.

Ever driven a 5ltr LJ? There alot of fun to drive even with a stock 308 and 4spd there tuff little packages, iv had a few in the past..

I agree with "Malaka". 308 is the way to go. You only have to hit ebay and youll find all the parts you need. Just yesterday there was a complete front end modded for holden 8 and a set of CRS rails. Both went cheap. Sumps are always on there.
With a little patience you can do it "fairly" cheap.

Dont remind about those rails, i missed out by $2.
VN headed meat pie if your doing it on the cheap, easier conversion, heaps of grunt for a small car.

He could go to a 383 if it was the chev no one mentioned that specifically hehe! Still Lj's didnt come out with either a 308 or a 350 so an engineers would be required for both and i have seen on ebay (ebays dodgey) kits to convert your LJ to 308 and up!
