Hey guys, we bought a v8 (10 bolt) salisbury disc brake diff out of a early model commodore, with the idea of using the backing plate, calipers and hopefully the discs in the uc hatchback. Some problems - the commodore axels are too big and wont get past the inner axel bearing inside the torrie salisbury diff housing (see pics)

Will 6 cylinder salisbury commodore diff axels fit?

Also I believe the length different (see height.gif) is nothing to worry about correct?

the length may not be a drama because of the spacer for disc brake rears, but the axle looks physically bigger in the spline area as well? You might be better off slipping the whole diff in if possible.

yeah the whole axel is bigger in diameter, but it was from a v8 commodore. Thats why I'm wondering if a six cylinder commodore salisbury's diff will have smaller axels.

are you just trying to replace busted axles or upgrade to avoid it...if just upgrading i believe UC's and early 6 cyl commo's had same "9" bolt type salisbury diffs just different studpattern, mounts and possibly length

UC had the small Sailsbury, Commodore and the larger cars had the 10 bolt. I think some of the later Commodores went to Borg Warner style right? They aren't like a nine inch though, a Banjo is the same style as a 9 inch.

I have a feeling there is a difference both in the crown wheel/hemisphere as well as the axle size. Whenever I have needed axles for my VH they have asked whether 5L or not. So in short I dont know but my gut feeling is yes they are different size, but am unsure of whether they fit from a length point. Be better to bolt the commodore one in instead...

Cheers

G'day aidan,
I found when i changed my uc to commodore disc on rear that the 6 cyl commodores had a small salisbury, which meant they had the same 23 spline axle. but I could not use the commodore axles as they were to long for the uc sedan diff. the v8 diffs in commodore had physically larger axles & I think they had 28 splines. I ended up with axles out of a VL BW diff cut & resplined.
cheers.

All I know for sure is that up until they used the BW, there were three versions of the Commodore diff.

#1 4 cyl diff.
#2 308 diff.
#3 The rest.

What the differences are, I'm not sure.
