i have an early prefix 186, (186A).

in theory this should have a steel crank, i have this engine out of the car and on an engine stand, how do i tell if it still has the steel crank? is the a part number or casting mark to look for?

I was of the belief the steel crank was only in 149 and 179, 186 was cast
they are the same crank and interchangable,
I thought the part number on crank ended in 777 for steel but don't quote me

Hi Guys.

ALL Holden 6 cyl cranks (149, 161, 179 & 186) were forged steel up to April 1967 (mid HR). After that only 186 X2, 186 S and LC XU-1 got the forgings all other 6 cranks were nodular cast iron.

Dr Terry.

so anyone have any idea of how to tell if its a steel one or not? mine is pre mid hr block so in theory it should be steel but its been rebuilt, i want to know if its worth putting on ebay as a 186s/X2/XU-1 type crank so i can save some $$$'s for my 202 rebuild

This works for chevs hope it helps.
Look at the front crank throw between the 1st main to
the 1st rod journal (the unmachined bit) if theres a
thin slightly raised line down the length of the throw
then its cast(casting mould parting line)
Forged cranks have a wide forging mark, about 8/10mm

cheers jono

If the crank is out of the motor, the "ring" test works, too.

Sit the crank vertically on a soft surface (bunch of rags will do) and hold it upright with one finger in the depression in the snout of the crank - in other words have minimum contact with the crank.

Now tap one of the counterweights with a small hammer.

If it has a real flat "dong" sound it's cast.

If it has a nice "ding" sound (kinda like you'd get from a bell) it's steel.

Forgings always have better resonance than castings. Don't laugh, it works.
cheers
Dave

Has anyone been able to confirm the part number for the steel cranks?

red 6 if you put it beside a std red crank you will see the cast counter weights will be smother on a steel one, a std one has sharp edges on counter weights. i got the part numbers of the ones that i have in the shed they are 7431320 and 7420005 hope this helps.

Thanks Hayden

Thanks for that. I now have one more question though. I was under the impression that the steel cranks were the same whether they were in a 179 or a 186 (3" stroke). However, there are three steel crank part numbers identified on this thread. Were there differences in the steel cranks depending on which engine it was fitted in? Thanks
