they are the same crank and interchangable,
I thought the part number on crank ended in 777 for steel but don't quote me

ALL Holden 6 cyl cranks (149, 161, 179 & 186) were forged steel up to April 1967 (mid HR). After that only 186 X2, 186 S and LC XU-1 got the forgings all other 6 cranks were nodular cast iron.

Look at the front crank throw between the 1st main to
the 1st rod journal (the unmachined bit) if theres a
thin slightly raised line down the length of the throw
then its cast(casting mould parting line)
Forged cranks have a wide forging mark, about 8/10mm

Sit the crank vertically on a soft surface (bunch of rags will do) and hold it upright with one finger in the depression in the snout of the crank - in other words have minimum contact with the crank.
Now tap one of the counterweights with a small hammer.
If it has a real flat "dong" sound it's cast.
If it has a nice "ding" sound (kinda like you'd get from a bell) it's steel.
Forgings always have better resonance than castings. Don't laugh, it works.
cheers
