I'll have a go in this section where it realy belongs i s'pose
Have a console out of a L 31 LX that has had the front hacked off it to fit an aftermarket air con to the car -- apparently there are a couple of types -- can any body tell me which type this is
Cheers

There are basically Hatch and sedan.

Hatch is different to the sedan version as the front has a different section to house the vents and escutchion switches.

Then there is the V8/6 version and the 4 cylinder version.

So basically there are 4 variants.

REDBULL has some good pictures.

That one you have is the type that belongs in the round file. :D

Agree with the round file option!

There's the small consoles that are about the same size as your current one too!

The one you have there is the early "small shifter" suround It looks to me to be a HJ-WB one though, not a Torana one.
Posted Image
Notice how one is flat at the bottom, the other is more sculpted. The flat one is HJ-WB, the sculpted is Torana.

Posted Image
This pic shows a hatchback console on the right and a Sunbird (sorry it's broken though) one on the left

Posted Image
This is the small shifter surround you need for the early console. This is also the same as the hatch one. For a sedan it has a small lid that opened forward of it.
Posted Image
This is the one you need for the later sedan consoles introduced around the time of RTS
https://rsp-secure.com/rarespares/
go to the website, look up torana and consoles you will see all the parts you need.

Yes Swarbs, please put your location in your signature.
With the console you had fitted were you able to change gears without the shifter hitting the console? If you have the small surround and it doesn't hit, chase a small surround console. Yes Rares have everything bar the actual console to suit your car. Sorry I don't have a pic on me of the correct console setup

Hopefully the location has gone in but North West WA
Bought the car about six years ago -- it had been sitting since about '92
The previous owner having parked it up after loosing oil pressure via a leak and ending up with a slight knock in the bottom end
Me and it have never fired a shot in anger and am slowly getting a bit of stuff together to hit it one day -- but not up here as it will have to be done in the big smoke -- that side of it is pretty well sorted plus the old girl is still in pretty good nick
This being the problem -- i see consoles on E-- bay etc.. and dont know weather i would be buying the right thing or not and as you know, they don't seem to be cheap for one in good condition.
I couldn't tell you if it would have hit as it did have a supra box in it when i bought it (now gone ) and i have the m 21 to go in to bring it back the way god intended
Sorry not being much help -- and yep the photo from someone would be great

First thing to check for quick recognition is that it doesn't have a row of slots near the shifter. The console should just have a lower section that's about 7cm across around there. It should have either a hinged lid at the front with the holden logo or a small tray with two screws at the base. In the tech articles there a pic of a hatch console at the bottom. :D

If these photo's dont work please go back to the original posting
Red -- would you have some photos of the W B L X consoles that are laying on there side but in an upright view

Your armrest and gearboot are homemade Swarbs (factory have 3 stitches along armrest) and it shouldn't have the hole in front of the armrest in the console, I think it's WB. I've got a couple here I can recondition if you need one!

The console you have pictured there is the small shifter type. The pic shows what you need for your car. It has the small shifter surround with the hinged lid forward of it. Like I said, the console for the early (small shifter) and late (large shifter) are physically different. Torana consoles are different again to HJ-WB as I pictured they are flatter along the bottom than Torana ones, so forget those. You need to find an early Torana console with the hinged lid and small surround. If you can only get the body of the console, than Rare Spares have all the other parts you need to complete it.

On some photos of the hatch console it appears to have a switch in front of the gear stick. The photo posted of the hatch console by Flamenco dosent have one. Whats the go here? My console dosent have this switch also. When I work out how to post pics I will post one. I think the console I have is correct but minus the mysterious switch.

When it's missing the switch/es then the escutucheon (can't remember how to spell it!)panel is missing. When they are on ebay they go for a fair bit ($150 upwards).

Got pics? There are two types for memory. The screw holes often snap through on them or people drill holes for alarm led's or other non standard switches.

Just had a closer look & a vinyl covered panel has been put over this area, so god knows what's under that. Looks like I'll have to chase one down somewhere.

Iv'e been trying to load photos but can't work out the system. Do we have to load the photos to the net elswhere & add the link to the img button?

I'd say you are right there. Thats why I remade them a few years ago. I got no interest, so I didn't take it further. I might look into it again
