I have some panels that i intend to bring back to bare matal. Once this has been achieved I will need to cut out some rust and panel beat some dents. What is the best option sandblarsting or a paint removing agent. I live in Perth and would like recommendations on a good sandblarster and the cost involved. Any feed back is appreciated. Thanks

I wouldn't recommend you have any panels sandblasted, too many tales of distorted wavy panels. Paint stripper, scraper and nylon scourer pads is my preferred method. It does involve some time for sure, but by the time you deliver your panels to be blasted, pick them up again and pay the bill manual stripping may not look so bad.

I've been using these plastic/reson looking paint stripping disks, I think they do a great job and they dont seem to bite into the metal. I attach them to my variable speed 8" grinder (cheap pos) with great results! Just make sure you keep moving to keep the heat down.

i use a 7" grinder with 36 grit fibrelight disks.

dosent put any scratches in the metal deep enough to affect it after you give her a few good coats of high build.

quick to.

I'm probably talking about a similar thing to above ^^^ but I've been using a disc that attaches to a power drill. Its a plasticy loose weaved thing (sorta like noodles) and it fair rips through paint without scratching too harshly. For real stubbon paint a bit of stripper, a plastic scraper then the plastic wire do-dad works a treat. $15 from bunnings or supercheap (or similar) and that includes the drill attachment. So far one disc has got me through a complete bootlid and its still got plenty of wear left. Takes no time at all compared to hand sanding or disc sanding and gets into awkward spots no worries. Thoroughly recommended!!! :spoton:

just be cautious with stripper to get it all out near joins in panels etc or you will never get paint to stick.

I recently bare metaled a panel off my Kingswood. I used paint stripper and a wire wheel attached to a drill. It did a good job and is alot quicker than sanding i then coated the panel in rust converter and left it to dry for afew days and coated it in etch primer. I am not sure if this is the correct method as the panel also needs some bog touch ups. My other option was to get all the front panels media blasted which includes priming and send it straight off to be panel beated and painted.

To get a car the Size of a Kingswood media blastered i was quoted roughly $1000 for all panels inside and out including under the car. A good option if you have the money ready to go.

Cheers

Sodablasting I hear is good. Gentle, leaves a slight film on the bare metal that inhibits rust, doesn't heat/warp panels, environment friendly.

I think someone in Perth does it too.

There is a mob in Sydney that do it at about $1600 for a fairly sized vehicle.

Has anyone heard of a place in mordialloc vic called DAF Industries? I was told they are good. They do sandblasting and will do you whole car cheap. I talked to a guy that just got his whole car done and he reckons they do a top job and did not put the slightest of ripple/warp in his panels

If you can afford it then soda blasting is the only way to go. A complete LX hatch cost around $1200.

This company is in Malaga.

clean and strip disc from rare spares drill or 7 inch we use sander, paint stripper, etc but only use sand blaster around edges etc, once stripped use clean&strip disc to clean out rust etc cleans metal till it has a gloss so give it a good sand with paper 80 grit once clean should do it :spoton:

Ive started on a door and Using a wire wheel mounted to a Grinder and works a treat and leaves the panel smooth as, no scratches at all...actually polishes it a little :D

AFAIK The soda blasting company doesn't prime the car. It leaves a residue behind to inhibit rust so you can leave it in bare metal for a while.

I'm not positive is takes away rust either, but it strips everything back to bare metal (paint, bog, etc.).
