Gday all Im running a stock 253 and it burns the centre out of the points around every 4 weeks. I usually pick it when they need changing as the car is harder to start and has a annoying flat spot when first accelerating. What Im looking for is to replace the points with some sort of electronic system. Is there a kit that you can get to just replace the points and not the dissy. Thanks Steve

how many volts have you got at the coil? sounds like its got 12 volts and no resistor.

You can get kits..but they cost about $150..you can get those reworked chev distributors for about $175..coil in cap ..just hook up 12 volts to them.

Pointless distributor out of a later model may do the trick - sounds to me like your condensor is shot in your old setup - try changing that and the points at the same time.

While it's not a bad idea to actually find the problem, going to electronic ignition is a far better option.

the cause is most likely your condensor is stuffed. couple of bucks for a new one

I changed the condenser a while ago. I should do it again. I remembered years ago I put some kind of kit in a gemini that did away with the points. You removed the points and condenser then put in another plate that was part of a electronic system. Anybody know of these units. Cheers Steve

You can buy a brand new bosche HEI copy on ebay for about $70 - $80 why would you bother converting a 30 yr old dizzy.

It was a Bosch system. Bought one around 20 years ago, still works perfect.

Steve, can only think that it is a problem with your coil or condensor. Having 12V going to the coil is feasible if a previous owner of your car had a different ignition system fitted, though would think your coil might have given up by now too.
What is the history of the car?

Im the second owner of the car. I bought it from a deceased estate a few years ago and think the coil is possibly original or close to it. I will fit a new coil and see how that goes. Cheers Steve

Steve, dont buy a new coil unless you have to, if it looks original.....it probably is. Possibly being from a deceased estate would most likely mean the car is unmodified and isnt running a resistor coil on a 12v wire. Easy enough to verify, run the motor and measure the voltage from the +ve of the coil to ground. It should be around 10V.

Put on a new coil this arvo. The engine seams to start abit easier.Hopefully now that Ive changed most bits in and around the dissy that has fixed the points problem. But I still have a very annoying problem that when your driving along and staying at the same RPM and when you put your foot down the engine has a flat spot in it before it accelerates.I put a timing light on it to check the advance was ok. So I decided to check the rest of the leads and found the lead to number 7 plug doesn`t fire that often, so tomorrow I will replace that lead and see what happens.I also just went out and started the car and found it started and run alot better(cold start). Cheers Steve.

Accelerator pump it was, had a new one in the shed so I threw it on and all problems went. Engine runs very smoothly now. Just got use a little bit of choke to start it when cold and no problems. Thanks for all the info hopefully no more problems for a long while. Cheers Steve. :D
