Each state has different laws.
In QLD I don't believe there is capacity limitation to what you are allowed to drive on your L or P plates.
I think for example NSW may have restrictions on either capacity or power output.

I understand that you are allowed to drive a V8 on your L Plates, but not your P Plates in NSW. Presume that is because you are with a licensed (responsible!!!) driver.

in vic ya can on ya l plates p plates forget it lol
while on the subject of p plates

New victorian drivers will remain on P-plates for an extra year and be subject to zero blood alcohol limits.
The move to increase the P-plate period to four years is a state government plan to cut the victorian road toll.
New drivers will spend a minimum of 12 months on L-plates.
They must also recieve 120 hours of instruction before undergoing a more challenging driving test to qualify for p-plates.
Under the plan, 18-19 y/old L-platers will spend 12 months on a restricted probationary licence, called P1, and have green P-plates.
Only P1 drivers with a clean driving record will prgressd to the 3 year P2 licence, identified by red P-plates.
A zero blood alcohol limit will apply for the four years of the new two stages probationary licence.
All p-platers will be banned from high powered caras and using mobile phones.
Repeat serious offenders such as drink driving, speeding, drag racing will carry severe penalties such as vehicle confiscation or forfieture. Offenders will also have to undergo counilling.
In addition, drivers under the age of 25 who are convicted of drink driving with a blood alcohol limit of 0.05 must have alcohol ignition lock fitted for 6 months to thier vehilces upon regaining there licence.

i would of never got my licence.
wonder when bracksy's gonna bring this in?

Hopefully never, or I better start practising even MORE but if I get caught that may jeopardise my oppurtunity to even get my L's let alone my P's

In Victoria, a 253 Torana can be legally driven on your Ps, a 308 cannot even though the Commodore 5L V8s (old 304s) can be driven, but Commodores are heavy pieces of shit.

On Ls, anything can be driven as far as I know, if I build up a 700HP blown 350 Chev Torrie I could still drive it if it was engineered/registered.

in vicoria, going by the sheet that I got from vicroads, you cannot drive any v8 torana because of the capacity to weight not the power to weight. BUT, the sheet that I was given used the weight of a 6 cyl LH/X to work out this, it gives 1183 (i think!) as the weight and using their 3.5l per 1000kg formula that leaves you with a max capacity of 4140 cc
and a 253 is 4.2l (well its actually 4146cc) and because a V8 LH/X would weigh more than 1183kg, you can drive it.

ps: it actually says on my new rego sticker that the car is considered as a high powered vehicle.

i dont like that stupid idea :fool: Bracksy has to go....

If they are going to restrict p-platers even more they need to look at gettin your p1 probationary licence when your say 16.5 or 17, then they could also wack on the passenger restrictions and whatever els restrictions they want untill you reach 18 then it turns back into what it is today. In addition everyone should be forced to sit defenceive driving corses.

I am just so pissed at this government, state politics in victoria at the moment is soo week, the wrong people are in the wrong places and are acting as if they own the bloody state.

Do u think this will Curb the Road Toll at all? What needs to happen is more driver education! everybody knows that new drivers to the road (and half the exisiting ones) need proper driving education, they need to know how to handle them selves on the roads.

Why do the governments keep ignoring this? This legislation is NOT going to stop stupid idiots in there Skylines drag racing! The people that die are the ones already breaking the law in the first place, Yes they may be P Platers, but they are no doubt Drunk, on drugs or just being plain old idiots! The Laws are already in to stop this, but they break them and die! The answer is not to bring in more laws for people to break, its teaching people that breaking the law is the wrong thing, a stronger police presence on the road is wat is needed (that doesnt mean pulling over every p plater either!) If u have noticed a cop driving the other way, how often do u check ur speed and not do anything stupid? even though he cant do much about it at that point in time anyway!

Anyway these governments shit me at the moment regarding these laws! This whole country is turning into a Dictatorship (JOHN HOWARD) and my country of free speech is changing, the secret service thing will prob read my post and have me black listed! :finger: GOVERNMENT!

i honesty dont think defensive driving courses would help, personally i think it would make kids "more cocky"
yes bracksy is a wanker (sue me :finger: ), hes currently advertising to rural victoria about how good this government is and how much they have spent on education (needless to say they are stupid enough to want to truck tons and tons of waste 500+km's from the source and dump it in a national park, in the middle of one of australia's biggest food producing areas, hence lill protest in sig)
UCK YA! were closer to adelaide than melbourne, wanna try this shite we'll just become south australians! :furious:

how does a defensive driving course make drivers more cocky, having skills and learning is less likely to create cockiness . Have you ever done a defensive driving course? are you speaking from experience?

i think its more about weighing up the consequences half the problem with these idiot p platers are they think they are invincible, they will try and get sideways out of any corner in any condition, without thinkin of wat may happen if something goes wrong, they dont look around and look to see wat cars are parked, wat kids are around, how wide the road is, how fast other cars are going, how wet the road is, how the car reacts in the wet, wat their tyre pressure is at. They just think, o well same as the last time i got sideways out the front of ronnies house!

They need to be shown that cars are dangerous, defensive driving courses show people how to get out of a rough situation, and also shows how easy it is for ur car to be in one of those situations.

There is a time and place for everything, U just need to know when and where!

yes actually i am, i have lost a few friends whom thought themselves able to handle a car. "i learned how to drive as fast as possible around a corner in contolled conditions" is usually the last words of dickheads who hit the gravel.
I drove rally for years. Doesnt mean im gonna try what i do on dirt on bitumen, i know where my limits are and i'll be f(*ked if i will push it, unfortunatley young drivers dont, especially in rural areas where 70% of this shit happens.

I've never heard of a defensive driving course where the students "learned how to drive as fast as possible around a corner in controlled conditions"
They are about teaching safety and accident avoidence skills , not race craft.
So I'll ask you again - Have you ever done a defensive driving course?
I am not trying to wind you up, I have lost mates too. There lives may not have been cut short if they realised the risks they were taking, now I'm not saying that a defensive driving course is the answer to it all but surely its better than no skills at all.
What would your sollution be? more driver education or less?

and over here in our part of country vic. the condition of the roads are not helping save any lives , cars have got faster but the roads have not!

Interesting topic,

I've done a few defensive driving courses, whilst I was in the process of getting my cams licence, I had my VX SS commodore, and I had a few of the young guys in their Holden commodores and utes competing against me, trying to go as hard and as fast as they could, giving the car heaps, showing off etc.. They ended up spinning out and laughing about it. They left the day not having learned a bloody thing and thinking they were gun drivers. I've also found that being a member of a car club and going to the club sprint days, you get the same thing, idiots out to push the car to the limit, with no real experience behind them.. Not all do it but there's always a couple. They don't look very happy though after their car hits the wall and has to be put on a flat tray truck and towed home... I don't know what the answer is, I have a 14 yr old daughter who can't wait to get her licence... I'm not looking forward to that day!!

i dont know where you did these so called defensive driver courses, denelequin ??, are you are thinking about car control?.i have done one when i was 18. it scared the shit out of me. i was a gun driver before i did it. i came out of the 2 day course with a different driving style. as for the defensive driver course, well i learned it was good for those who did not understand benifits of abs, how to load your car with groceries, how to swerve and brake at the same time. shit like that.

the people who should attend this are, assholes who drive big 4wds for no particulair purpose, like mum picking up the kids in her 3 tonne pedestrian molestor. l platers. and old folk ,< like 90 yolds.

someone start a poll, who hates the government atm

I put it down to "inferiority syndrome" with the 202 but it got more punishment than my V8 has or will see.

With the 5.5L and over double the power, I'm happier to cruise slowly to the sweet sound of it, knowing it's as tough [at least sounds it] and the power is there if I need it/want it.
I think the fuel consumption when WOT on the holley helps keeps the right foot in check a little as well.

I did my defensive driver courses through John Bowe driving school at Calder Park, on the thunderdome..... also at Sandown... And like I said, it was only a few who mucked around, but that's all it takes on the road, just a few!! :D

I won't tell you stories about my poor Old Laser then, other than to say there's a few disgruntled WRX backwards hat wearing guys out there. Thought they could drive.

I have to admit that i was one of those dickhead p platers that thought he was invincible when i was in my late teens early twenties. I dont know how much a defensive driving course would changed my attitude at the time. I think it comes down to maturity really. I was stupid and had stupid mates who thought we could handle everything. Luckily for us we had no accidents . Looking back it was probably just luck but at the time we thought we were gun drivers and i dont think much would have swayed our mindset.
Now when i see dicks driving like maniacs it really pisses me off and i realise how stupid me and my friends were.
I think more police presence is also needed on our roads, that is about the only thing that slowed us down and growing up of course. Thats my 2c anyway.

I agree with you ChiaLX. Lucky I'm still here today. Driving to school at 17, overtake, oops dip in the road and a car concealed in the dip on 100 km/h highway (old sort ---> 2 way traffic)!!! Panic. Ended up squeezing over the car next to us (2 wheels in the dirt for him) and car coming head on passed in the other direction with two wheels in the dirt while we drove up the middle of the road!!! Still remember that moment to this day, some 20 odd years later.

Unfortunately I don't think you can, nor would you want to beat the youth out of young people. If anything, I think that defensive driving would only make they youngens worse, and besides like back then, they already know everything.
