i know a few of you have done the sensible thing and transplanted a nissan 6 into your car and i want to know what would be involved in having a roadwarthy conversion. apart from the obvious modification to the sump, mounts, maybe tunnel (to fit a manual), what body modifications must be done for this swap to be legal? i plan to fit an rb30et and manual from a vl. dont hate me, its just cheaper than working a 40 plus year old design. i plan to fit a hoppers 290mm brakes to the front and vl discs to the back, along with the shortened diff. so, what have the few of you done to pass engineering apart from the aforementioned mods? also, how much will rego be in SA approximately? again, dont hate me because its a jap motor. i'm just thinking for the futurre.

ok.
for starters use a pre 1971 lc shell and you only need a pcv valve.
if you use a body dated 1/1971 or later you must adhere to the adr's of the engine which is 1986.
that means cat converter, polution gear, modifying inlet manifold and camshaft is illegal.
now to the actual fitup,
the biggest problem you will have is lack of room for thermo fans.
i removed the thin lip on the bay of the lc and still didnt have as much room as i would have liked.
my advice to anyone doing this conversion is to make a 50mm recess into the firewall to set the engine back.

that was a very helpful link. what modifications did you perform to do your transplant? how hard was/is it to pass engineering?

well mine started out as a wild street car but has ended up a race car so i will never rego it.
it was built with rego in mind though and could pass if i tamed it down i a few areas
really all i did was fit a new trans tunnel.the rest is just a case of make it work.

how much did you have to take out the tunnel? what trans are you using? i would rather not cut into the structure so any tips on how to enlarge it without the help of Mr Hammer? any other info would be super.

Mal B,
I too am about to try and put a Turbo RB30 into my LC two door and was looking for some helpful information, and me being old and having kept a lot of magazines around the home found a story on a two door LJ RB 30 conversion.
The story is titled "Orange Crusher" and is in a little known mag of unknown publication date called WILD TORANAS No.1.
If you can find a copy it might let you see how one has been done and apparently registered (in Canberra I guess from the plates on the car in the pics.)
I will be using the VL five speed that is fitted to the motor as it is coming out of my son's VL Calias as he is building a 500+ HP RB30 with auto as a replacement for the standard motor. he said something about not enough power???
I too figured that working a 186 is a lot harder than a turbo six transplant especailly when the motor and box will be available quite cheaply. I dont intend to do do much work on the motor itself as it is still in good condition and should give good power to the lightweight LC.
I have obtained a VN Borgwarner diff that I want to get cut down for the LC as I expect it should handle the RB30 power as it is said to be the same diff as in the VL Turbos?
The only doubt I have is if the VL 5 speed box will fit in the tunnel. The car in the story mentioned had a Chrysler twin turbo hemi in it originally and the story does not mention the need for conversion of the tunnel but I wonder if the tunnel was converted for the earlier Chrysler motor?
Anybody have any clues on this issue?
Garry

if the rb30et turbo manual box is the same or similar size to the rb25det box, i had to refab my trans tunnel completely to allow it to fit, and thats in my LX 4 door
