i need to mount my harness but dont have a cage. CAMS state that original mounting points are OK if they are to a substantial part of the cars structure.

Has anyone got away with mounting to the original parcel shelf location?
Or could i bolt a cross bar between the two original bolts, and bolt the harness to that?

G'day mate.

I use my STi for club competition and do not have it caged. I had Maximum Motorsport weld 2 fitting points to the rear firewall behind the back seat.

Very strong, can't be seen if i take the belts off.

Down side is long seatbelts which in certain circumstances can be a problem.

Brett, The CAMS manual states that the bolt area must be reinforced with 75mm x 75mm plate inside and out. On Yella I drilled 2 holes on the parcel shelf..mainly for period looks ..got 2 steel plates from the local steel place 3mm thick...drilled them and mounted. Been no dramas at scrut'ing.

What Rory said........
Well that's the way it has always been done.
BUT (theres always a but with me isn't there!) :tease:
With this mounting the belts incline up and over the rear seat, now when you pull on them hard the seat top gets compressed and the belts go loose.... Another thing to remember.. The longer the belts the more the stretch.
I used the old way for a long time and never a problem... But.... (There it is again!!!) :D I was always pulling on my harness trying to tighten it after 2-3 laps, so it was definately stretching under load.
If you don't have a cage you need a harness bar.
To make a simple one........... length of 1.5"dia CDW and a mount on either end that will go between the original rear seat belt mounts on the parcel tray. Then mount the eye bolts throught the tube. Neat and a whole lot safer!

Cheers Greg..

thanks guys.

yeah, cams manual said something about substantil part of chassis, so i didnt know if parcel shelf was ok.

I dont have a rear seat to worry about.

so the option of a 150 x 75 plate with 2 holes in it under the shelf sounds easier and lighter than a tube running right across the shelf.

cheers
