hi all
i successfully fitted a heatshield the other day (thanks to info from bazza),
now i just need to know something,
i have extractors, and it was a bloody tight fit trying to fit the heatshield, now the heatshield is touching the extractors, and quite possibly the bottom of one of the the carbs. is the heatshield now useless due to the extractors touching it?
will the shield just heat up and cause the same issues as when i never had one on?
anyway any help will be appreciated.
thanks all
heatshield touching extractors

Hi lcgtr1970
I now have cast iron headers and there is plenty of clearance except for under the middle carb which has about 1/4in clearance. I checked the extractors that I took off and the previous owner had "relieved" an area of the extractors with (probably) a cold chisel of similar.
Try bending the three tabs up a little to provide some clearance. You may be able to grab the heatshield and simply yank it up a bit. If you achieve 1/4in by either method - that should be sufficient.
I think it is important to have an air gap rather than none.

hi bazza,
thanks for the help.
just got another question tho.
what if i was to ditch the extractors, and replace them with the cast iron headers?
will i notice any real difference in regards to power loss, sound/exhaust note etc?
or will i gain anything anywhere?
thanks for the help.

I can only speak from my experience - others may disagree and I am sure that they will chime in with more info.
I only changed back to headers in the interests of originality. I found the extractors (with no resonator) a rawer and more droning sound from inside the car. I didn't like it at all. I like the sound now with the headers, correct engine pipe, resonator and muffler. The sound of an idling XU-1 is still an acquired taste.
I haven't noticed any difference in performance around town and cruising. I think I read somewhere that extractors only come into their own at higher revs. Remember only the '73 Bathurst Special XU-1 had extractors as standard.
Hope this helps.
