Gday all,
I suppose I should introduce myself first, im fairly new here. My names Blake, im 16(young I know) and I own a 1976 LX SS Torana.

Ive recently spent just over a grand getting the mechanical side of things up to scratch, and im looking at getting it painted because the outside of the car isnt looking all that good. The engine is out of the car at the moment, because I want to paint the engine bay as well.

Im just curious about;
-Whats involved?
-How much would it cost?
-Am I better off having a go at it myself, or letting a proffessional do it?

The colours I am looking at it is either white or metallic blue. I know that white would probably be the cheaper option, but is there a real big price difference between the two colours?

There isnt really all that much rust on the car, there is a medium sized spot behind the rear bumper bar, and the roof has surface rust, but thats pretty much it really.

Cheers in advance guys :spoton:

well done a SS at 16... ok so lets see some pics and have a ball with it. If you are going to have a go painting it yourself you will find white a lot more forgiving, and good on you for having a go!!!

Usually when painting there is not that much of a difference in price unless you are looking at group four colours (these are grouped via the additives and amount of tinter required to bring up the colour you have choosen. Most whites have some black or yellow in them to "dirty" them as pure white is too much.

I would suggest paying $500 odd bucks at a tafe that will teach you the skills to paint the car 100%. While you may think this is expensive it will at least give you a solid understanding of what is require to paint the car and also someone whom can assist in your technique etc. Metallic can be difficult but with practise patence and determination you will get there.

Cheers

Good stuff Blake, another SS getting restored is fantastic. If you can restore it to its original plate codes, paint, driveline etc. It will give you better value in the future, as original to factory are more valuable then modified. However its your car and your choice, so good luck with it !!!

Here is a few photos. The engine is in the shed, im wanting to paint the engine bay as well.

Ive got about 1300 in the bank at the moment, can anyone give me a rough estimate on the price of paint and all the other stuff needed(sandpaper, thinners, etc)?

Door and boot had to be replaced because of rust.

Also if anyone could help me with whats legal and whats not in WA, that would be awesome.

Very nice SS Blake. You would be doing yourself a big favour by keeping the car the same colour. Not that appealing to a 16 year old but your taste will change over time. My advice would be do it yourself if you want to change the colour and get it professionally done if you want to keep it the same colour. It is more work to completely change thew colour.

yeah mate, thats a nice color anyway.

that color should be a group 2 color, so probably around the $50 a litre mark. i use and reccomend protec products. you would be best off getting about 6 litres, that allows for a bit of trial and error. use acrylic primer filler, this is about $50 for 4L, fairly cheap. another $50 for 4kg of bog (big tin lol), $80 for 20l of acrylic thinners (easyer that way), and allow $50 for prepsol, sand paper, ect. also you will need a gun and decent compressor. real basic gun would be a star s770, these are around the $120 mark, and a good gun, i have one on order atm for work. but i spray industrial 2k at work...far cry from acrylic. if you get one of these the 2mm nozel one would be better than the 1.5 option. my acrylic gun is an iwata air gunzo ate gtz3 (get all that?), grav feed with a 1.8mm nozel. that was worth about $250 but was worth every cent, beautiful gun. you will also need atleast a 12 cfm compressor, 16 is better.

if you wait a little while i'm doing up a tutorial that covers everhing from taking the paint off to buffing it up. couple more weeks and i'll have it up.

definitaly ahve a go at it yourself, i painted my first car when i was 15 :P i'm 17 now and have painted 5 cars and two trucks...aswell as a couple of smash repairs (and no im not an apprentice painter).....oh and a motorbike lol.

if ya need any help drop me a pm....

I reckon that'd be an appealing colour for a 16 year old's car. :D

But I'm a screwed up kid so don't listen to me. Something you may want to listen to though... I'd try and find a mate that would be willing to do a job on the car for a reasonable price, and give you a few hints along the way. You mix the paints etc, he teaches you to do the door jams, boot jams, engine bay etc, then he does all the flat surfaces, exterior faces of the panels.

Then you save some cash and learn some skills for when you want to paint another car.

Its got a medium size hole of rust just behind the bumper, i will take a photo of it soon.

We havnt got a mig welder to fix it either, so that is delaying me slightly.

Hi there, ive been a spray painter for 8 1/2 years now and id have to disagree. i remember doing jobs in my first and second year that i was so proud of then, that now, with a trained eye wouldnt piss on. I think its great advise to learn from somebody who really knows what theyre doin. you never stop learning and if you where to do an apprenticship i think youd have a bit more respect for what it takes to produce a job of real showroom quality. plus if hes on a limited budget it would certainly break the bank if he stuffs it up the first time and has to buy the materials all over again. near enough aint good enough coz lets face it, she aint no corolla....shes a torana!!!

BlakeSS

all I have to say to you is this...

If you are looking at a "quick fix" repaint etc, mate you have the basis of an original aussie motoring icon.

I know that you are only 16 and if I remember correctly, that was about the same age I was when the "in" cars were the A9X's, the Monaros, etc..

As an "older" 42 year old, all I can say is this... The car you have is a classic!!!! If you are not prepared to give it the respect that it deserves, then give it to your father...

This car may not "turn" the heads of your mates and the babes, but it will earn you the kudos of other classic car owners..

mate, my advice to you is this.. keep it clean and keep it original.. it is the best advise that this old guy can give you..

I hope that it goes well, which ever way you want it

cheers
Mick

Blake SS, I think if you gave the engine bay a good clean with some kero and cleaned up the rest of the paint with some cutting compound and elbow grease you would get a pleasant surprise. The door could be easily painted and the SS stripes are available new for a good price from sstorana. You could also look at removing the old window tint. It has purpled. With such a classic you would easily find help with repainting the door. People like to help restore classics but not many like to help F>>K them. My final 2 cents of wisdom.

yeah i got ya mate. my only thing is it aint terrably hard to spray a car, and he could do it himself wihlst money is a bit slight and save 4k for a painter, and then when money gets a bit freer shell out for a pro job.

my torana is starting to go downhill a bit, between chips/scratches in the engine bay from taking the motor in and out and pulling it to bits in there (i've had the intake manifold on and off about 30 times so far....) to just generaly needing a buff, i've decided not to worry bout it to much (will buff it up again one day though) and wait till i'm more or less done performance wise then repaint her. hell, i might even shell out for someone to do a cob job on her....i would try it but i don't think cob would go to well in the backyard lol.

Looks like we will be spraying some old shitty ute at school that we have been sanding back. Should give me a bit of practice. I dont mind the colour thats on there actually, and im still contemplating on wether or not to go the different colour(which im getting the impression that it will be more work) or just stay the colour. Im sitting on about 1600 at the moment, which should definetely cover supplies yeah?

A new cam would be nice :D

I painted my car in the garage at home. It's clear over base 2 pac paint, no oven (do wish I used one) and it turned out ok! You can't beat experience, like some of the guys have said if you do a bad job you have to find all that money again. Practice on your engine bay first, use acrylic much more forgiving than two pac. And get lots of advice, its all in the preperation.

Hi BlakeSS, What is the engine and gear box codes for this car. Is it L31 and M21 or something different.
Your car looks very much like one of mine although yours has a lot more paint on it than mine at the moment. Aqua
