Did Holden make a 2850 badge (173) or 3100 (186) for the fuel filler cap as they made one for 2250 (138), 2600 (2600) and 3300 (202) thanks. I think a LJ Torana Parts catalogue would tell you if they did or not I suppose. thanks

Hi GTRXU1.

AFAIK the ones you list are the only 6 cylinder engine sizes on fuel caps. There are several versions for the 4 cylinders, while the rest had the Holden Lion badge. The only other exception is the black XU-1 cap with no badge at all.

So did they produce a 2850 cap for the LJ??

Hi

Going by the LJ Parts Manual - there are only 2 LJ fuel caps
ie. P/N 2805021 (all except XU-1) and P/N 2816161 (XU-1). There is only 1 insert P/N 2813992. There is a publicity shot of an "S" (2250) model LJ with the 'black and chrome lion' cap.

Given that the LJ XU-1 had a black cap and no insert - I suggest that all LJ Toranas had the "black and chrome lion cap" apart from the XU-1.

It follows that the LC Toranas used the 2250 (138 cid) 2600 (161) and the GTR (black and chrome lion). The 173s GTR would also use the "black and chrome lion" cap. Again, the XU-1 used the plain black cap.

So unless someone can prove me wrong - I would say that there is no "2850" cap.

Hi Guys.

AFAIK there is no 2850 cap, but there is a 3300 cap. It was used for the non-GTR 3300s, '73 onwards, because there was no 3300 LJ-style diecast badge. The only 4 fuel cap inserts seen on LJs are 1600 OHC, 1760 OHC, 3300 & the Lion badge.

The various 4-cyl badges seen are (Series)70 (LC only), 1300 (TA only), 1600 OHC (LC & LJ) & 1760 OHC (LJ &TA). All the 4-cyl LC/LJ/TA engines are Vauxhall-sourced, the 1900 mentioned ^^^^ was Opel-sourced but was only used in the LH/LX/UC series, not LC/LJ, therefore there would be no 1900 fuel cap insert.

Thanks for that, although is it possible that a 2850 insert was produced ?? in 73 for the 173 engine and like the 3300 for non-standard GTRs

Hi

Somebody with a 1974 LJ Nasco parts catalogue should be able to confirm. Mine is Feb '72 and it makes no mention of multiple inserts.

Cool, if they exist I really want to get my hands on one, thanks to all those whohave corresponded with their knowledge, greatly appreciated.

I have quite a good collection of petrol caps and inserts and would like to get them all to complete a set so I can put a few images up on our website.

In response to Bazza's request -

The June 1975 LJ Parts Catalogue lists 4 fuel cap inserts -

1160, 70, 1300, 2250 & 2850 eng. P/N 2813992
1600 eng. P/N 2822133
1760 eng. P/N 9930185
3300 excluding XU1 eng. P/N 9930691

It would appear that a 2850 item would be after market.

Hope this helps.

Thanks wingnut

So it looks like the chrome and black lion was used on the 6 cylinders (except XU-1) until the 3300 became an option later in the production run.
