Hi, while the question is about the 308 in my LH i figured it was a generic enough question to stick in this section.

I have been doing some work on my car over the last few weeks and was getting ready to take it down for the new exhaust when, the night before, I started the car and snapped the accelerator cable at the pedal. Being already a/h and car booked in for the next moring and me leaving for holies in the arvo I grabbed an old cable I had lying around and fitted it. However the pedal is now closer to the floor (approx 3/4 pedal) at rest. I can pull the pedal up to the old normal position but when I let it go it just flops back down. It doesn't affect acceleration in terms of revving hard like foot on pedal but obviously the throw of the pedal is affected and it hits the floor at about 4000rpm, allowing no more go.

I wouldn't have thought it would influence it, but the only difference I can find is that the "new" cable is about a foot longer than the old one. Is it too long and therefore too slack, not holding the pedal up or what? I didn't expect that there would be different size cables like this. Both setups were 308's and holly's.

Is the cable length the problem or should I be looking at the pedal? I'm guessing rarespares would be the only place to stock cables...

Cheers,

I have bought a speedo and hand brake and maybe even an accelerator cable from Auto Cables (Joe Pace). Is cheaper than Rares and the cables look original.

Is at Auto Cables or

3 Eliza Close
Greensborough
Vic 3088

LH-LX V8 accelarator cable $40.43. Part number 9928918.

All parts places have universal accelerator cables.. they also sell just the INNERS for the cable in varying lengths.

I bought an inner for the HQ and it stays in teh car since ive managed to snap 2 throttle cables!!

So is the length of the cable the issue, changing it for a cable that will match the length of the old one will fix the problem?

Umm yes...

THe cable should have a little ball thingie that clips into the accelerator pedal, and the other length should be able to be trimmed to length.

How does it attach to your carby? Is it just the inner that broke? the outer sheath was ok?

If so, then a new inner would be fine.. even the inner out of the linger cable cut to length would do!

Cheers

Did you happen to take the pedal out of the car??

The bracket that it bolts onto on the firewall actually has a slootted hole in it and if the pedal mount point is pushed closer to the firewall then you will experience this exact problem.

Crack the nut and and try and slide the pedal out from the firewall and then do it up nice and tight again.

I have come across similar issues before and usually found this was the concern.

The actual length of the cable should not matter. Its actually the difference in length between the inner and outer that affects the "pull" on the cable!! Its all to do with leverage and pivot points.

So how did you go with this??

Any luck with fixing it or not??

Havn't had a second look at it yet, its still at the exhaust bloke at the moment. I have the old cable here and was going to look at finding a new one the same length but was wanting to check the pedal like you suggested. I did remove the pedal but was sure I put it back correctly, so I'll check that first before spending the $$ on a new cable. Getting the car back on Friday.

Cheers,

Peddle in correct postion, other positions just made it worse. Have given the original cable to Joe at the aforementioned Auto Cables (thanks EXLXSL) and he is making a new one up the the same length, should be picking it up Thursday. Hopefully will be back to normal soon after that.

Cheers,
