I recently bought a LX hatchback rolling body. I have worked out that it was originally a 4cyl. car (LX8UH77). Manufacture date is 8/77.

Did Sunbirds still get marked on the compliance plate as Torana Coupe?
When was the Sunbird hatch actually released. I have read May '77, mid '77 and Sept. '77.
This is all just curiousity because it wont be returned to stock condition.

It was fitted with a V8 at some stage and I will be installing an injected 5 litre and T5 from a Commodore in the future. Does any on have any diff recommendations for this setup?
Car was originally Mint Julep and will remain so. Currently has SLR/SS gauges in an SL fascia. The interior will remain in the original Chamois colour and pattern. Wont be building an SS/A9X clone, just a nice V8 hatch.

Cheers,
Kev

The badges would have said Sunbird, but the compliance plate says Torana

All maunufactured as Torana. Sunbird is the model. Pre RTS 4 cyclinder Torana is Torana 1900. RTS onwards was SUNBIRD. Sunbird was introduced late September 1977. I would say your car was pre RTS.

pre RTS at 8/77? the Sunbird was the first Holden to get RTS, and probably the car that needed it the most as it had bugger all else going for it at the time.

sounds unreal! congrats on the purchase, and remember to keep us posted with your progress of the build! ;) Sounds like it will be a nice car once done.

as for the diffs, im sure there are better experts on here then me, but either a BW or a 9in would be alright for strength...

Cheers

Hi Guys.

Just to clarify a few comments.

The LX Sunbird 4-door replaced the LX Torana 1900 4-door in November 1976.

The LX Sunbird hatchback wasn't released until 29th September 1977. Production of these would've started in August anyway, so a 8/77 is OK.

An LX8UH77 is an LX Sunbird hatchback. There was no LX Torana 1900 hatchback (prior to the Sunbird hatch) sold in Australia, however they did produce them for export.

All Sunbirds & Toranas have 'Torana' stamped on the ADR Compliance plate.

ALL Sunbirds have RTS, as REDA9X has mentioned the Sunbird 4-door was the 1st Holden with RTS.

Dr Terry.

Yeah, the Guy at Vicroads this week when i was getting my GF UC registered, Was questioning just this. He was trying to say that it was Not a Holden Torana Sunbird, But and Holden Sunbird. And Holden Sunbirds only came with a 4cyl. So we needed an Engineers certificate. But all i did was point at what the compliance plate read, and he seemed to change his story and say that it must have been one of the prototype models... haha Whatever. Its registered and thats all that matters i guess...

Thanks for all the replies and to Dr Terry for clearing up the issue of Sunbird hatchbacks. I am guessing then that with a September 29 release that mine is a very early one. Is it possible to tell when in August it was built or is the month as close as it gets?

Kev
