Hi Guys,
Have started to attempt removal of heater box and fan in an LJ, as mine is damaged and needs replacing.. What a Mongrel of a job... I have removed the nuts from all the fixing bolts that i can find, but i must have a couple left to find at the very Drivers side end of the box!!! The other 6 or so were easy. Do i have to remove heater fan to get enoungh clearance to take out box??? I removed the fan cover, and it appears that the plastic fan itself is very solidly stuck to the fan shaft....... Any suggestions, as i dont want to damage it... Any help or suggestions with box removal would be appreciated....

Thanx Shep

Hey Shep, theres 4 nuts that hold the Air Distribution duct on(under the dash)
2 more around the fan motor and 1 more inbetween, remove them and then
you only have some sealer between the plenum chamber & heater box base.
Disconnect the fan earth & resistor wires & heat control cable from heater box
You might need to carefully lever the box up near RH side to loosen the sealer
& the box & fan lift out as 1

Shep

I attempted the same job about 4 years ago. I didn't do a real good job and had to buy a whole replacement unit in order to make the engine bay look ok,

If I was to do it all again I would do exactly what you are doing, ask for ideas from the guys on the forum.

To the job...You probably have found them but here are a couple of small nuts you need to remove that are located under the dash.

On top of that, if I had my time again, I would have the use of a small spatula to help with the old glue issue, softly softly and prise.

If you get stuck I think I could find some paperwork to help, (have move house) unfortunately I will be away for the next week.

Good luck with the project

Regards

Yep its a dog of a job. :gun:

From memory the best way to get to the drivers side nuts is to lie upside down on the driver seat, with your head jamed under the clutch so you can see what your doing. :tease:

Yeah Steve you are right... What a ...rick of a job... I have got the box out, but it severly damaged underneath, from a dodgy previous repair... I have seen another LJ shell in a paddock near where i live, and i will be knocking on the door on the weekend.... Hope fully it will have a heater box.. If not i have decided to make on up outta stainless..... Do you know if you can buy replacement fans ? The motor itself is ok, but the fan is stuffed... I am in the process of starting a full rebuild, and will post some pics after the weekend.. I only bought the car a few weeks ago, so am learning as i go. All the suggestions and help i have been getting from the forum etc has been great...
Thanks again Shep :spoton:

Thanks for all your help guys. :D I lucked out today and scored an excellent heater box and heaps of other gear from a local farmers paddock LJ.. With the directions, and the gentle use of a heat gun, patience and a little luck it all came out easy...  Does anyone have any hints about csplitting the box and cleaning it all up ????

Hey Shep
Those 2 long bolts either side of the motor
have a lock type washer on them thats a
bugger to remove without screwing them up

You mean the sheet metal nuts? Yes they require a bit of gentleness.
