hi everyone,

i know there have been a few other posts on this subject, so i'll try and keep it brief.

i'm planning on putting a V6 into my LX, i was originally going to put in an ecotec from a VS commodore, as there are kits from CRS and V6conversions.com for it. but i've been doing some more searching and i figured if i was going to go to the trouble of doing a conversion why not go for the much newer and more powerful Alloytec.

i've read in another thread on this site that when you give them a bit of a thrashing they start to rattle and blow smoke, is this true, or would have that been just a dud engine? are they good solid motors?

also how hard would it be to mount it, what would i need to do? would i be able to modify the engine mounting kit for the ectotec or something? i know that CRS can make one off kits, but i would imagine that it wouldn't be cheap.

and how would i go about mounting the new gearbox that comes with the alloytec, would it be sort of a bolt in job? or would i have to modify a kit or make something of my own, would it even fit in the LX? again, i could ask CRS to make me a kit, but it would cost an arm and a leg. also, if it wouldn't fit, would there be some way of putting a T5 onto the alloytec? i'd rather the newer 6 speed, but it all depends if it will fit at all and if i'd be able to mount it.

and being a relitively new engine, are there many go-fast bits around for it?

any help would be greatly appreciated,

thanks

i've also heard that the ecotecs have more low down torque, and that the alloytecs, while they are an improvement, they aren't a huge improvement, so would it be worth the extra time, effort and money to go for the alloytec, or should i just stick with the ecotec? i don't mind that much for smoothness as i was originally planning to get the 308, and that would have rumbled alot more than the ecotec.

There are plenty of go fast bits for the ecotec and I guess in time there will be the same for the alloytec. Just depends on how long you are willing to wait for alloytec conversions and bolts ons. I reckon your best bet would be to give v6conversions a call and find out from them directly, they are the experts when it comes to v6 swaps.

Might be more economical to go the ecotec and add some goodies rather than tackle a conversion that not many have done yet. COME sell stroker kits, Yella Terra do heads, The Brock Shop have exhaust packages etc etc so there are heaps of options out there, from what Ive read though, none of them seem particualrly cheap unfortunately.

Yeah, Im in the process of fitting a Buick 3.8l to my LX hatch.

I wanted an alloytech, but there would have been way to much stuffing around, with getting it to fit and computer issues.

I got the conversion kit from V6 Conversions and although every thing is "bolt ON" we have modifies many things which was very dissapointing.

If you go the T5 manual you have to cut heaps of the tunnel to get it to fit, now we are having issues with clearance for the uni joint.

But were getting there.

Yeah, Im in the process of fitting a Buick 3.8l to my LX hatch.

why did you go for th Buick over the Ecotec? I've heard that the Ecotec is a big improvement on the Buick and v6conversions still sell a kit for them, is there something I'm unaware of with the Ecotec?

and with the T5, how much is heaps? because i don't have a huge array of tools, nor any experience in engine conversions

all depends on the motor. the ecotec was meant to have comething like 25KW more then the Buick V6, but as with all cars some went like stink off a monkey and others were pieces of shit. My Buick V6 in my VR kills most other standard ecotechs (mates VZ, brothers VS, used to killl old mans VX ute)

its a freak of nature thing.

if you were to be rebuilding it anyway, the only real difference from buik-ecotech was the alloy heads (yes other things changed but it is still a cast block etc)

my old mans ute has a STD ecotec, with roller rockers, MSD 10mm leads, custom 2 1/2 inch exhaust, cutom extractors and few other bits and pieces. its a 5 speed manual, and it goes pretty well for a STD 6. got a set of MSD coil packs to go on, and getting a baby camshaft ground up.

all in all, it depends on what you can afford, alloytecs arent really cheap to begin with, then there is the fitment and stuff. better off going the tried and tested route IMO.

ohh and there are cheaper S/C kits for buicks then there are for ecotech. another thought.

Umm I wanted to go for the ecotec but was a bitch to find a manual.

Written off ones were selling for about $2k.

Then one of dads mates had a buick 3.8l outta a VP with a T5. SO i went for that because it was only $500 and saved alot of room and time compared with getting an engine out of another car.

In saying that I have spent $3000 fully rebuilding it, but I was gunna do that with an eco anyway.

To fit the T5 I had to cut into the cross brace a little bit. The cross brace goes from one side of the car to the other, for length issues.

But to get it high enough so that the V6conversions crossmember could bolt up, i had to cut a srip of the tunnel out, about 250mm side to side all the way up to where the tunnel meets the fire wall.

I will try and get photos up soon if you want.

I believe the conversion kit is made with the idea that the engine will have an outo on it.

Cheers
