Over the years, I have seen a couple of scissor hoists that use hydraulic fluid that use a 240V pump. I did have a brochure from a place in Scoresby that sells them. Shall have a look for it later.

830: I know the problem about not having 3 Phase power..

I belive there was some convertor available to convert 240 to 3 phase.. it'll never have the grunt of a propper 3 phase system, but a hoise onlyuses a small motor. Couldnt see why single phase wont supply enough power to run it! I cant remeber where i saw that though :(

Have you tried contacting any of the hoist manufacturers to see if they have single phase models? Other than that, maybe you could buy a cheap second hand hoist and retro fit a single phase motor to it?

Just a few ideas!
Cheers.

a single phase motor will not have enough torque to lift a two post hoist but you can buy a transfer or an inventor to run 240v to 320v. it all depends what you want to spend.

I bought a Bishoman hoist at an auction that was powered by a 3phase motor.
Got it home and spoke to everyone who said that there is no way you can convert it to 240Volt.
Looked on the TECO website for a compatible motor (same flange mount and drive keyways etc...) found that they had one rated at the same HP as the 3phase, picked it up and bolted it on..
Works just fine!!! even 3 years down the track.
Try

Hi 830hp

A bloke was selling hoists - 2 & 4 posts at the last Bendigo Swap.
They were new chong imports - single or 3 phase.
If my memory serves correctly the cheapest was about $ 2900 for 2 post single ph.

Contact was Graham McRae, Katoomba Spares Ph 02 4782 1846. Agent for Hanmecson Car Hoists.

I have also seen numerous hoists auctioned at the Sherrif's clearance sales at Oakleigh
Vic. - usually confiscated / impounded garage equipment - and sell for $ 2000 upwards - may be worth a look.

Cheers JR

Great tip wingnut! Thanks

Edit: Added: If your going to buy an imported hoist, make sure its got standard approval! Especialy if its going to be used in a workshop.. Dont want to buy some dodgey dangerous heap of crap!

Devils:  it HAD to be you to pick it ;)

830,
Have you looked into getting 3 phase power?
I though the price was reasonable when I enquired about it in the past.

bones , 3 phrase power is not in my street , i contacted power supply company and they estimated about 20 grand to run it from the intersection at the top of my street to here ...

i think the best option is to do what 82911 has done , dont think i could trust a chinese inport hoist ...

Im sure a 240V motor with the right gearing can do a satisfactory job. A 10A 240V motor would lift a 2tonne car 2m in about 20-25secs, that would be good enough?

a single phase motor can do anything a 3 phase motor can do, it will just require more current to do it... thus thicker cables...

tho single phase is less efficient
