i'm going to throw this in some other forums just for a laugh, to see if we can decipher an educated overall leader here.. should be interesting results going from a mopar forum to a chev to a ford lol

so who found what to be a more useable engine, who got better EASY horsepower out of what? and why you would pick it.??

but heres the thing, i don't want to just hear the usual v8 supercar banter about someones mill being the greatest, i want to know why??

Cheers.
Dan.

sorry, feel free to include your thoughts on the humble 308, just that as all being of similar sizes (and mainly what i have) i thought it a good learning curve,

cheers,

well well, this is interesting, in less then 24 hours we have rather varying results from forum to forum, maybe a tad biassed but here goes. . .

note, i've focussed on aussie dominated forums, the tables may be turned completely in a global or US forum

heres the results so far (might have to register)

http://www.gmh-toran...1&mode=show&st=

350 chev [ 5 ] [50.00%]

351 clevo [ 1 ] [10.00%]

360 mopar [ 4 ] [40.00%]

http://www.fordforum...lts&pollid=1098

350 chev 10 12.66%

360 mopar 19 24.05%

351 clevo 50 63.29%

http://www.hemi6pack...ults&pollid=105

351 clevo 0 0%

350 chev 5 27.78%

360 mopar 13 72.22%

cheers,

Knighty.

hehehe

rounding results from all forums (as of the present)

350 = 30.146%

351 = 24.43%

360 = 45.41%

the only reason i diddn't include the 340 in this poll was simply how HARD they are to find whereas the 360's a bit more common.

interesting results though

Everyone I know thats built a chev has been happy with the end result and they have the best support in the aftermarket = cheaper to build.

Clevo's are great , the one i had in an XW certainly was fun but Chevs/Windsors fit better in tight engine bays.

Chrysler 360's are a truck motor. the 318 i had in a VG hardtop wouldn't have held a candle to a Chev or Ford. IF you said a high winding 340 or any Mopar big block over 383 I'd have a different opinion.

Try and get a hold of Popular Hot Roddings Engine Masters build series that might help form an opinion for ya.
Small Block Chev would be my choice

I think when it comes to the 350cube size of small block engine, the most popular engines are the venerable 350, and the old clevo...

Now... My choice is the chev, mostly because i'm biased... BUT..

In years gone by, the chev was easier to buy parts for and easier to extract horses from which meant cheaper..

In recent times though, ive seen the ford guys catching up wholesale on the chevy blokes with availability of parts, THe wealth of knowledge that has come about for both the clevo and windsor now means that power is just as easy to squeeze from either motor at around the same kind of cost.

The only engine i dont know about is the Chrysler! I dont see *ALOT* of afermarket bits for them in the stuff that i read, so i'm GUESSING that they would be a bit more expensive to make power from? Chrysler big blocks win hands down though!

SO... My money is on the Chev mill.. pretty much only for the reasons stated above.. The 308 is now an affordable engine to extract numbers from and really compares well with the old school "just whack a chev in it if you want it to go" story!

That's my thoughts anyhow :) As to engine design... i think they all have their strong and weak points! ( but i'm no expert!)

i like all 3 options been in some of each that really tear ass but my favourite was the charger with the 340 that went like stink but the only problem coming to a corner its funny watching the old racing from the late 60s early seventies one race in particular the xys al blew out there right hand rear tyres the xu1s did there fronts n the valiants ended up winning mind you if the fords n holden didnt blow the tyres the vals woulda been left for dead

SBC - Most popular V8 in the world, easy parts availability and knowledge abounds. Simple yet effective. Most stockers are doughy though they respond well to bolt ons.

360 Mopar - Highly under developed, responds really well to bolt ons and minor mods. Very reliable and torquey. Underrated.

351 Clevo - Good truck engine in standard form. Not as responsive to minor mods. The best flowing aftermarket heads on this planet are Clevo heads, but they are expensive. I personally prefer the 351 Windsor.

Dollar for dollar you have to go with the strength. You can build more horsepower for less $$ with the SBC.

I love my Mopars too!!....... I've always wanted to put a 265 powered VH charger or even a lil old Centura in the stable!! But I don't think I'd throw money at another small block Chrysler again. Big Block YES :D

All of these engines are very very good and can make some big hp. but mostly require aftermarket parts to make them go. The humble aussie v8 should not be left out. My ss runs a factory 215 kw stroker engine. it runs std block ,crank , rods and pistons. The std heads are ported with std valves, crane 244 @ 50 cam and 10.2;1 comp.Active single plane manifold and 750 hp holley. it has vk commo electronic dissy with 6al. it ran 10.9 at 123 mph on first outing in street trim hatchback with more to come. you dont see too many chev ford or mopar running 10's with cast iron pollution type heads and pump fuel

In the latest issue of the american magazine HOTROD there is an article featuring the build of a 414ci Mopar small block stroker making 500HP @5700rpm.

Might be worth a look if your a Mopar guy!!
