Hi folks,on my LCGTR i have the usual tags attached to the vehicle which have all been checked and verified thanks to(hg350) but going by all of the pictures i have seen of LCGTRs both the plates are together on the right hand side of the car radiator support panel (if your standing looking at the car front on ,they are on the right ,side by side) .Anyway my tags are separated ,the square one with body paint and so fourth is on the left and the long VIN is on the right hand side. The tags have not been messed with and have original rivets ,were these tags fitted in different locations according to where they were built?semmi concerned.71LCGTR.

Just to clarify, your car has the painted Body plate on the passenger side, and the thin VIN plate on the drivers side? (like LJ's) What month in 71 was your car made?

Hi, i have a 5/70 lc gtr which has the tags as you described and a 4/71 lc gtr which have the tags either side of the radiator. One of the guru's could probably tell you when the transitions of mounting the plates occured. Kev

These are purely guesses but are the two rivets the same distance apart on each of the tags? They could have been removed at one stage and refitted the wrong way unknowingly... (original rivets can still be bought off ebay from time to time).

My next question would be can you see or feel any extra holes under the tag area (I can't remember if this area is accesible or maybe you might need to remove the grille and/or headlight/s to see underneath).

They would be a couple of easy things to have a look for.

G,day Flemenco,no the rivets are different distances apart on both tags,i looked for other holes on the side which has the vin and yes there are two extra holes ,one visible and one underneath but these extra holes look like they have never been used for any plates ,there is even a raised edge near one of the holes the same size as the body tag but it looks like the tag has never been on this side ?Could the support panels have all been made the same with the holes in for the plates but at different factories they were placed apart?

It's been awhile since I looked closely at that area of an LC/LJ but my guess would be no. One other thing comes to mind (a guess) is that your car may have been in a smash and had the front area replaced with the one from an LJ. That might be the reason for two set of holes?

G'day 71LCGTR

Just to clarify a few things concerning LC ID tags.

NORMALLY you would find the compliance plate under the windscreen wiper motor and on this plate there would be the same number that is on the inner left guard adjacent to the carby.

The VIN plate is on top of the radiator support adjacent to the radiator cap (drivers side) and is a long thin strip. The numbers on this will confirm it is a GTR/XU-1.

The VIN number will also have the model on it "C" for LC and another letter after that like "H" with the first number after that confirming where it was made.

ie: Mine had "H1" which denotes it as being Brisbane made (Acacia Ridge) If that is the case, then the number on the inner guard and compliance plate should have a "B" on the end of it, meaning Brisbane made. That is how they should all tie in.

Assembly Plant Code
H1 thru to H5 : Brisbane
H5 thru to H9 : Sydney
J1 thru to J9 : Melbourne
L1 thru to L5 : Adelaide
L6 thru to L9 : Perth

The numbers after the "H1" is the Vehicle Serial Numberand this number represents the sequence in which this Vehicle was built at the plant concerned.
I have seen some LC Toranas that have both the VIN & Body/trim/paint tags on the passenger side radiator support panel.

I was until mid last year in contact with Ron who worked at Acacia Ridge when my car was being assembled and he more than likely put the wiring loom into my car.
He told me in a letter that it was very hectic when the cars were going through and that there were mistakes made. Most sections only had 3 minutes 20 seconds with their particular part of the car to be worked on.
He quoted and re-affirmed the story about a 3-door Torana being made, 1 door on one side and 2 on the other.

If you have a parts book and look at the panels that went into making an LC/LJ Torana body shell, you could see that it was possible for that mistake to happen.

When some one tells me that this or that model Torana came out exactly like "THIS", then, Yes that is almost correct as there were mistakes made during the assembling BUT not all cars had this or that in exactly the same place.

Regards........................Barry.

Thanks Barry ,all the tags match the vehicle with the number stamped on the inner gard theres no problems there but its looking more like the car has been in a bingle at one stage ,the front fender looks like it has been replaced at some stage and could have had some radiator support panel damage as well and the tags have been put back on the wrong way round .dammmm!
