You need to make up a spring compressor tool, the standard ones wont get in there.
What you need is some 3/4" threaded bar, pass that throught the top shock mount and lockit in with a nut on top.
The length of the bar should be down the middle of the spring where the shock goes. Drill a hole in a suitable lungth of plate that can fit across the bottom control arm. Put a nut on the bottom of the threaded bar and wind it in!
I wish I could draw a pic.....

Cheers Greg..

I must be doing it wrong cause the amount of times i've seen posted on this forum that they dont fit, but i've had them for 20years and thats all ive ever used, they are a lil bent tho, and a prick to use.

ALX76,

Maybe your spring compressors have longer 'claws' on them, I know the standard supercheap ones I have - have really short claws so the threaded rod is right against the side of the coil spring so there is no way to get them in there without the upper and lower control arms getting in the way on a Torana front end.

The best tool I made for that job ages ago was from a section of Cyclone tiedown threaded rod M12. I filed the top thinner so it went through the top shock mount and drilled a small hole in it and welded a connecting nut to the bottom, whole rod was a bit longer than a fully extended shock. the other forcing part was the bottom off an old shock, just the part with the two bolt holes, drilled in the centre with a M12 nut welded to it.
The method was spin the lower mount on the threaded rod all the way till it was against the welded on connecting nut. Then put the rod up through the lower hole as though you were installing a shockie, poke the thinner section through the top mount, put a washer and a split pin or quick clip throught the hole to hold it. Then rtate the connecting nut until the lower mount takes up the slack, bolt it in as per a shockie, then you car just wind it up and down as required, very easy to use and cost about $8 at the local hardware and doesnt leave nasty marks on the springs. I hope this explaination helps
